Can I change from Qantas Direct to Membership Rewards with Amex Card once issued?.

Simple question and forgive me if answered elsewhere.

But can I change between reward program options with an Amex card once it has been issued?
Say I want to choose Qantas Direct to start and then change in 6 mths to MR. Can it be done?
Are there fees? Do I have to start a new card?
