Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000004824 StartFragment:0000001918 EndFragment:0000004788Hi, I’m a newby to this site (I can’t believe I didn’t know it existed) and need some help with dividend miles. Apologies if I’ve posted in the wrong place or if this type of question has already been answered.

On the weekend someone told me about dividend miles and I thought whoo hoo – I’m going to Turkey in March and wouldn’t it be fabulous to fly J Class.

I went to the US Airways site and registered myself and my daughter (aged 11) as members. I saw that after 12 days I could buy up to 50,000 miles for $1350 and would receive a bonus 50,000 miles. All good. I could use them on Star Alliance flights Thai/ Singapore and Turkish airlines.

Then the problems started. There was no way on the site I could see what award flights would be available as I was starting the trip from Australia. And I also couldn’t find out how many miles would be required for my itinerary. So I resorted to calling the USA and after 25 minutes on the phone I was eventually told it would cost 120,000 miles for a trip Melbourne/ Bangkok/ Istanbul return in J class but such a trip couldn’t be booked online. I would have to call the US for anything I wanted to book. The operator had a look and told me she could get us there but couldn’t get us home.

It seems to me a catch 22 – there is no point in buying miles if you can’t use them and it’s almost impossible to find out if you can use them!

As the trip was 120,000 miles, I would have to buy an additional 20,000 miles (which I assume is possible). This would make the total cost of the trip $1,900 (plus taxes ?) which is great so I’m persevering!

How have you all got around this problem? Am I doing anything wrong? What am I missing!!!

Should I just forget it and book an Emirates economy ticket!
All advice gratefully received.

It won't let me post to that thread! It also says my login is invalid. Can you tell me how to get to the administrator. Thanks.

It's a completely different website/forum to this one Serendipity. ;)

You'll need to register there (FlyerTalk - The world's most popular frequent flyer community) to be able to post your question. But drewbles is right, whilst we're a helpful bunch here, you'll probably get better info there on this particular question as it is a US-based site.

My advice to you is to put aside a couple of HOURS and go through the Flyertalk forum thoroughly. It's pretty self-explanatory, but the time it takes for one to explain the processes to you here will far exceed the time and effort it would take for you to go through the very informative FAQ sections in that forum.

You will be amazed (as I was) at the level of detail and insights you can get from those forums.

The Aeroplan Travel Reward Search engine at Travel will show availability for DM redemption purposes.

Thanks everyone. Now I realise it's another website - not just different thread. I will research, research, research. Cheers.

Serdendipity, do you remember those Karate Kid movies (in the 80's?) where poor Daniel-son wanted to become an instant karate kid expert so he could teach all those bullies a lesson in the playground? Well poor Daniel-son thought all it would take was a few DIY video lessons and that would make him unstoppable. However a few lessons here are there didn't stop the bullying and but more importantly didn't get the result he wanted. I think your question is an analogy to Daniel-son's situation where you want to get something that is really good (ie cheap J flights) but without yet doing the work that is required - you will get frustrated with the process and not book what you want.

Later on in the Karate Kid series, with good guidance through Master Miyagi .... Daniel-son learns the good techniques, completes his training and masters the basics to ensure that he becomes a great karate expert. This is similar to booking cheap flights.... through good guidance eg. here and Flyertalk, you will learn the basic skills, know the steps and develop the techniques to ensure you can book those cheap J tickets.

Do your homework, read up on all the threads in the next 12 days before you're officially allowed to buy points, and you will get what you want and even more. Good luck.
