I am booked on a 1:35PM Jetstar service to Sydney on the 15th June, and returning on a 7:30PM Qantas service on the same day.

With the ash cloud over, should I be expected delays or even cancellation? What should I do?

I am only going up for a day trip, so I will only have carry on luggage (i.e camera, tickets, water and phone charger)

As of 0100, Qantas has cancelled flights in and out of Melbourne today (Monday) up to around 1100. If their performance during the Heathrow Snow Saga in December is anything to go by, that WILL change, and more cancellations are likely.

Best thing to do is contact the airline on the day of your flight. Sadly, they can't or sometimes don't give you any information on the day before, so your best option is to ring on Wednesday morning to make sure.

Keep track of your flight by checking here:
Flight Status of Qantas Arrivals and Departures.
or look at media releases here:
Qantas Major Disruptions - where we keep you informed of developments and the choices that are available to you

I'm currently in Melbourne and am due to return to Sydney on Tuesday morning at 0600, so I can get into my work by about 0900. Personally I wouldn't mind if my flight is delayed or cancelled! :)

Good luck!

.... If their performance during the Heathrow Snow Saga in December is anything to go by, that WILL change, and more cancellations are likely....
The Heathrow snow performance was due to the inabilty the airport to handle a little snow. Nothing to do with the performance of the many airlines caught out

There is now news of a second cloud coming. Not looking good.
Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre cautions that Perth and Adelaide airspace may be at risk from ash clouds in the next 24 hours, with other incursions into southern Australian airspace later in the week. Qantas says it has also been advised that Melbourne airspace may see a return of ash clouds within 18 hours.

Just a couple more questions.

1. Qantas is now saying that flights to/from Melbourne on the 15th can now be changed to a new date, how is this done? When I go onto the "Change Flights" in the bookings sections, it is saying I have to pay the difference.

2. I am flying up to Sydney for the day with Jetstar and flying back with Qantas. Lets say my flight to Sydney is on time, but my flight home with Qantas is cancelled because of the ash cloud. I am only bringing a camera and tickets, plus a water bottle. If there are no more flights what will Qantas do? As I am only 17 I don't have a credit card, so it is not like I can go and check in to a hotel.

3. What is the latest on the ash, will MEL-SYD-MEL flights be running on Wednesday.

Sorry for all the questions, just want to get it sorted.

1. I believe you will have to call, be prepared for a long wait.... use a landline or there may be hefty charges for the call
2. If there are no more flights, be patient (I know it is hard in such circumstances), explain the situation to them and see what they can do for you. QF generally do try to help...
3. go to qantas.com, look up flight status of your flight to see if they are still going ahead or cancelled (I think you may only be able to see a day ahead, they keep updating it) or melbourne airport site (for arrivals - put into search engine flights from Sydney)

My suggestion: do not go if not essential and if they are happy to refund you the fares (JQ and QF)

Ok, thanks. I dont really want a refund because I got both of these fares for a very low price, I just really either want to go on Wednesday or defer it until next Wednesday.
