Interesting story and somewhat surprising, I would have thought Tiger would be way ahead!

QANTAS is one of the worst airlines in the world for add-on fees, a surprising report has found. The airline came fourth in the world in ancillary revenue earnings for 2010, and second in the world in charges on a per-passenger basis, according to a study conducted by US company IdeaWorks.
It made a whopping $1,487,674,076in add-on costs like excess baggage, booking fees and seat selection last year - an increase of $4 million on the previous year.
This means that the average Qantas flyer was charged $36 to fly last year on top of the cost of their ticket.

Interesting article sort of interesting conclusions. I would point out though that personally the only thing I have paid is for beer on DOM flights before the 4PM free time starts or at the weekend.

I hate to defend QF but...

From what i read somewhere the methodology used was screwy to make QF look a lot worse than they are. It compared revenue generated from ticket sales compared to revenue generated from non ticket sales.

QF make a lot of money from their FF program. Economically they are a loyalty scheme with planes attached in terms of what does and doesn't make them money. I think the extra revenue included here is from their FF program not from fees and charges.

[NOTE: i have made no effort to confirm this but i did read it somewhere credible. Can't find the link. Could be wrong. YMMV]

The QF credit card fee of $7.70 per passenger is a huge ripoff. You make one payment, but the fee depends on the number of people you are booking for. Pure gouging.

Your on the money 777 looking at the source material for the article, not sure why News did not pick that up :lol::

Qantas disclosed “ancillary revenue” of A$334 million (€252 million) from traditional à la carte sources. However, it is the Qantas Frequent Flyer Programme that really piles on the profits. Revenue posted by the programme was A$1.108 billion (€835 million) for 2010. Points in the programme have seemingly gained the status of official currency through partnerships with major Australian retailers and banks. With 7.2 million members, that’s a stunning A$154 (€116) for every programme member.

I have to wonder if the "non-flying" charges include YQ Fuel Fines?

If they use any kind of card they will be charged $7.70 for a domestic booking, and $60 for an international booking.

Holy toledo! The credit card charge for international has doubled?!

QF have been fourth for total revenue two years in a row. And how did EK make this year's list?

As a percentage of total revenue, QF doesn't even make the list. What the?
