Jetstar to operate SYD-AKL-SFO?

I find it strange that Qantas just dropped SFO...

As for Jetstar operating it via AKL on A330's...... Maybe but it's not an option for business travelers as *Class for that route is just not good enough.

V Australia should fly to SFO three times weekly to start with...

Not a rumour as yet just "plausible speculation"-at least according to Plane Talking that is,
SFO dilemma for flyers as Qantas competitors consider their options | Plane Talking

What do we think? Could/should it happen?

Not something I would subject myself to. The other SFO option mentioned in the article would interest me, would seriously consider diverting my US spend to the competitor.

LA is terrible, option of Dallas on 747 via who knows where is equally un-inspired. Hope AA and airport fees are making this worthwhile for someone.

Interesting! SFO would be my preferred airport to fly out of the US from... and I guess if JQ were operating that route I would consider flying with them when a starclass sale was on.

The author of the blog has clearly been reading the speculative thread on airliners.net that emerged a day or two ago.....

I missed that one but noticed the article on Crikey and thought is was of interest so decided to post it here.
Jestar to SFO is an interesting idea, not sure I'd try it but I'd wait and see, anyway we will have to wait and see whether it happens.

I don't.

Qantas is a network carrier. Its partner in North America is AA. AA is slowly reducing point to point routes, within its network, which do not start or end at cornerstone markets. In North America, AA's cornerstone markets are - New York, Chicago, Miami, Dallas/FW & Los Angeles. AA is in the process of reducing routes to/from SFO. And, AA has been slowly increasing its focus on LAX.

My guess is that AA's future strategy, may be to view the whole "Bay Area" as a origin/destination, rather than a transfer/hub port. This could mean AA's "San Francisco" becomes as much about SJC & OAK as SFO: Which might enable it to compete more effectively for O&D traffic against SFO's hub airlines.

Jetstar International (Long Haul) is a hybrid point to point carrier, and part of its quasi-network strategy appears to be tackling Star Alliance carriers head on (where they compete for traffic with the Qantas brand). Therefore SFO (and AKL) seem ideal ports, to deploy the brand :?:

JQ SYD-SFO seems logical if we assume QF dropped SFO due insufficient high yielding corporate customers vs leisure travelers.

If Similar starclass sales would be offered, it makes a good SC run with AKL stopover.

Though my preference is QF brings back SFO in the future when they finally get som 787 birds.
