Is anyone sick of flying? I am...

So far this year, I have 120 hours in the air over 25 flights. All of them except a *Class SIN-MEL in Y. That rate puts me on track for a similar total to last year (490 hrs and 93 flights) all in Y except for op-ups. (1980 SC for my QFF YTD with two months to go)

I have to say that I am sick of flying in Y. Before the GFC, we had a policy of J for 8+ hour flights. Now it's all Y and I seriously miss J (food, seats, space)...

So far this year;

27 sectors,
69,490 miles,
154.67 hours

all in Y.

I have another 3 sectors, 6,291 miles and 14.25 hours to go in the next 2 days. :(

I'm over it.

That is doing it hard. You have my sympathy it is tough motivating yourself to get on another Y long haul flight. Makes me feel grateful to be in Y+ today.

I had to make a decision after the GFC, fly J and make people redundant or fly Y and keep them. Y was the only option. It has crept up to Y+ this year and I use my own points for 2 MEL-LHR JASA's in return for one paid J trip. I doubt that it will ever get back to J again.

The age old problem at work is that when folk see you traveling regularly to Europe and the US they think it is all holiday and fun. It certainly ain't that! :(

Actually, flying short legs sucks. Infact lately I've much prefered flying Y than J (domestically) due to the more often than not blocked seat next to me + headrest wings. QF biz seats don't get have either of these..

Having spent 5 of the last 8 days in a plane or an airport I am over it for this week

I usually get sick of travel by the time I get to MEL on the way back from Fiji ;)

Even the J lounge doesn’t make me happy at that stage.

Well actually, my last few flights in QF J on a 767 I’m managed to have the seat next to me blocked, or at least no one chose the seat next to mine. Row 1 too! :p

I'm more of a train person myself. If there's a train going somewhere I'm keen to be on it.

If you folks complain about 13+ hours in Y to fly to LA, have a think about 60+ hours LAX-NYP on Amtrak. ::evil: (seriously I live for that ****)

Sometimes I can do the 13+ SYD to LAX with ease.
Othertimes, i feel every bit of the last 3.

Depends if i have been working up until the very last second i guess.

I enjoyed the Boston DC run in that fast train. Still cough infrastructure compared to Europe

If you haven't chugged along at 30mph through the Rust Belt or had to bash ice out of the brakes with a crowbar in the Rockies you haven't lived. :D

Nope. l've had about 6 months off and ready to get back on a plane ASAP. J (fingers crossed)

drron, can you please put "spacers' in your sentences. Yes, your 100 times smarter than me, but please, for the love of Christ, can you put some space marks into your sentences???

Strictly leisure traveller here, and definitely not sick of it. Bring it on I say! :p

As someone who has most of their life travelled Y, having done a J (with a bit of F thrown in) RTW last year, without wishing to sound precious or entitled about it, it's going to be very hard to go back to longhaul Y - so much so that I will be doing my best to avoid it, not that I necessarily will be able to.

I have to say I admire those posters who clock up the huge hours and distances in Y - that would would be tough, no matter who is paying.

I'm not sick of it -- but I have a personal policy of whY+ rather than whY for long haul flying, which definitely helps. I also really don't do that much flying by comparison to some of y'all, so that would certainly make a difference as well. :)

3 months in to my QF year with 2500 SCs...

Yes tired of travelling.

J

I'm seriously sick and tired of it... I did QF25 in J and yeah by the 7 hr mark I just wanted to be off the plane... I have 11 flights this month... and though most if it's in J I just don't want to do it anymore... it use to be exciting but now... farout...

Does anyone else get sick of it all?

I don't fly nearly as much as you so 'no' from me - but sounds like a change from J to F might make things bearable?

Someone else in this thread mentioned pre GFC a lof more companies sending folks J, now many more are stuck in Y and I think it makes a difference. The various beancounters just see the added cost, but I think what they are not factoring in is that very frequent flyers will eventually 'hit the wall' as it seems you may have done.

When that happens is different for all of us, but companies need to be extremely wary of this as its hard to motivate a worn out road warrior once he hits that block - best to keep them as comfortable as possible to reduce the chance of ever getting there.

I don't fly that much compared to a number on this forum but I worked out the other day I flew 65 sectors in the 12 months to 31 March. All were domestic on Qantas and 53 were in Y, 12 in J.

It was a mix of business and personal (23 v 42). I can't say I'm over it yet.

In the twelve months ahead I've got booked or planned another 28 sectors, a mix of Y and J. :)

And after that I'm planning a DONE4 for the latter part of 2012. :p

I'm just under 1600SC this year so far but I'm in no way sick of it. I'm thinking about delaying another job and doing a snap DONE4 in May already. When I am on the ground, I just dream of more air travel. The delays, the re-routings, the delayed baggage are all part of the fun, in fact. No-one in my family or my friends seems to understand how AA lost both of my bags in two separate incidents and I continued my holidays with only baggage I had carried with me, and yet I just laughed about it all.

Flying for me is fun - always has been, and hopefully always will be.

I have done 98 flights in the past 12 months, all domestic, and around 120 nights in ICHG hotels, and as we roll in to the last quarter of the fiscal year it is looking just as busy. This calendar year alone I am currently sitting on 55 nights in hotels, am I sick of it, not so much, I have decided if travel is going to come at a personal cost then I need to make the most of it.

So I start at 8 & knock off at 5, outside those hours I go check out what the locals are doing, be it a BBQ on the Esplanade at Cairns or an early morning walk out to the wharf in DRW, or just a nice latte in Townsville to get the day started, it makes a difference.

Sounds awfully like a line from 'Up In The Air' :p

I started a thread like this about January last year when I was feeling the same. I'm flying once a week at present but only short hops so it's not too bad. The things I hate most are the trips to and from the airport actually! I live about an hour away and it seems to take as long as the taxi out to the end of the 3rd runway at SYD (is that 34R?)
