I haven't been international for a year now, and I am itching with bad travel syndrome. I've done plenty of domestic in the last year though.

Anyway I bit the bullet and decided to get some time off work to get some snow. I'm going to meet one of my best friends in Zurich. Everyone tells me to avoid LHR like a plague.

Of course I am a OW dog, but I'm now thinking to fly with SQ to fly from SYD-SIN-ZRH instead of going through LHR with QF.

Any thoughts? :)

Well, if you prefer OW, then I don't think it's that big a deal going through LHR (or FRA or CDG). Adds a few hours onto the journey, but it's a long one anyway. I guess weather could play a part.

If you wanted to stick to oneworld and avoid LHR, according to ITA and searching within the next two months, your best bet is to either try:
  • Going to FRA (i.e. QF5) and then a connecting LX flight to ZRH. (The LX flight won't earn for QF, but at least the longest sector is ow).
  • Get to SIN or BKK, fly AY to HEL then ZRH.

Both of these options price out over $2,000 for a return fare.

The cheapest ow fare to ZRH is about $1,900 and goes through LHR, unfortunately.

The cheapest fare overall is actually the SQ fare you found which goes from SIN to ZRH directly (using 388 equipment IIRC).

Try:

SYD/HKG - HKG/ZRH (Via HEL) AY70/AY857
or
SYD/HKG - HKG/ZRH (Via AMN) RJ183/RJ153

(QF, Fin & Jordanian combo)
