This trip came about as a result of reading about these trips and wondering about maximising SCs per dollar. With a bit of luck I discovered one out of las Vegas that will net me 600 SCs for $828us. The fine details of such trips are often kept quiet. I have learnt so much on this forum this an attempt to give something back.

Part 1

Las Vegas - Los Angeles
AA 2404 First seat 4F
December 11 09:00

This is a short flight - just a dink offered. My only concern is that we arrive at LAX in time to make the connecting flight. We do so it's all good.

Los Angeles - New York
AA 40 First seat 3A
December 11 11:05

This flight is my first ever 3 class transcontinental on AA. Oh my goodness what a difference. Big seat pitch - bigger than QF J international. Printed menus. Any drink you want before take-off.

Streets ahead of any domestic flight I have ever taken. On taking my seat (bonus no next door passenger) I notice the inflight internet service. $30 a month. Hell I have paid almost as much for a day in some hotels. So I try it. This TR is coming to you live from my seat on the plane!

Lunch is a salad served from a trolley and then a chicken pot pie followed by a very good sundae. I was offered a portable video player but declined I am enjoying playing around on the net too much. Even managed a skype call!

Overall service so far is excellent. I will add to this report from JFK.

Awesome, please keep us updated.

I noticed the same when I flew F transcontinental SFO-JFK earlier in the year. I declined the video as I was on the red-eye ;)

Good luck with the rest of the trip :)

Interested to hear the finer details.... :)

Enjoy the rest of the trip!

part 2

New York (JFK) - San Juan SJU
AA 1639 Business Seat 2B (Shakespeare's preferred seat)
December 11 20:30

This flight credits to business as it leaves the 50 states of the USA - so no first possible. 3/3 left on time but no internet on this flight. Dinner was a chicken panini - nothing to report of any excitement at all. Watched No Ordinary Family on the Ipad dozed off flight arrived 1 :15 am. Checked in to the Best Western Airport hotel and its back via a different route tomorrow.

So 290 SC's - a pretty easy day's work.

Postscript - with a major snowstorm moving into Chicago tomorrow - life may not be so easy.

Part 3

Well the luck ran out. Chicago to Las Vegas has been cancelled (snow in Chicago) but in the end I was grateful to stay in first class. Often people on YUPP/KUPP fares find themselves downgraded. So its less SCs but MIA-ORD-LAS is now direct Miami-Vegas. The Admiral's Club dragon thinks I will be able to claim for the original legs but I doubt it.

Even if you are downgraded to Y (as I was last year due to storms) you will still be credited SCs for the original class booked. Not sure about the MIA-ORD-LAS legs - you might get the original booked SCs but I'm not sure.

Funny thing is I'm doing alkmost exactly the same run today! Currently sitting in the EWR Admiral's Club waiting for the EWR-MIA flight 1609 then on to SJU for a few days in the sun (or rain! - never mind, I have a book). Then returning via LAS as you have done but I deccoded on DFW for the return to EWR because of the chance of snow at this time of year. Advance forecasts look promising for the rest of the week.

I'm stuck in DFW at the moment, my flight to ORD having been cancelled. AA have re-booked me - with a delay of 30 hours! Hmmm.

Part 4

San Juan SJU - MIA
AA 1886 Seat 2F
December 12 12:15

Nothing new to report. Very ordinary cheese enchilada served on a totally full flight. Made my way to the Admiral's Club in Miami for the now direct flight back to Vegas. Kudos to the AA staff at the Admiral's Club for getting me out of a mess so efficiently.

The End

MIA-LAS
AA 1663 Seat 3F
December 12 16:00

The last leg of the SC run thanks to the snow. Ended up in a bulkhead seat which I never like. It's long flight - five and a half hours. Watched a lot of Entourage on the PC. No wireless available. So that's it. 5 flights in total, 4 different types of aircraft.

Points earned - just over 20000 including bonuses.
Status Credits earned - 470 - posted already within 12 hours of final leg.

It's the best SC per $ earn I am ever likely to make. Would have been even better but for o'hare canceling 1000 flights yesterday.

Having just done that route I'm curious why the MIA-SJU leg is classed as Business considering the level if service is the same as mainland First Class. The seats were actually better on the the 737 I flew to SJU than the 757 from EWR-MIA!

I guess this outlines why a run is probably a better option during the warmer months in the USA, dependant on the fare prices. :)

Nice to hear about your experiences, thanks for posting.

Transborder 2 class flights are classed as Business in the front cabin. Same cabin is First on domestic flights.

So applies to flights to Mexico, Canada, Caribbean etc
