We are travelling QF 29, HKG-LHR in J in May 2011. We have been pre-allocated 18J & K. Seat Guru notes that they are standard skybeds but it seems that these seats do not exist on all services. Can anyone make me wiser as to how good a seat these are? It seems rows 25 & 26 are available downstairs.

I would take any seats on the top deck of a 747, but that might just be me. (I may just be odd, but I would take top deck 747 over any 380 J seat)

16A/B or J/K would be the best seats for a couple. Crew jump seats in front. Can get out without disturbing your other half. But honestly no bad seats in J. Enjoy !

Just to clarify my original question. How/Why is it that seats 18 J & K apparently only appear on some flights? What is it about that particular aircraft?

I believe it is different configuration of the 4 class 744 - one is 747-400 and other is 747-400ER. They bought 6 ERs and they came off the line in a separate batch to the earlier ones, hence slightly different.

Btw, 18 is fine. I was allocated 12A for this Saturday, but moved myself to 18J for an aisle. Top deck is the way to go - no bad seats up there!

Of course, I'd take 23A/B / 23J/K over any upperdeck seats ... or 4E/F in a 2 or 3 class 744.

I'm curious as to why 23A/B /23J/K .....I know they get the thumbs up on seat guru. I have always preferred top deck but I have not flow enough J on a 744 to know whether I'm missing out!

Keep an eye on the flight as they sometimes sell F as J class. Last year in July I was able to select 3K as my seat about 3 days prior to departure. Rows 3 & 4 are good for couples. Its currently being sold as a 4 class config.

Otherwise any upstairs seats are good. First row you may have to contend with the toilet light and cupboard. Last row with the galley but closer to the drinks:)

I'm curious as to why 23A/B /23J/K
  • Bulkhead row, so easier access to A/K seats when the B/J is reclined
  • Larger overhead bins
  • Faster off the aircraft
  • No shaking/creaking floor when people walk past
  • More "open" feel of the cabin
My preference is for lower deck unless can scope row 16 on the upper deck.

Certainly go with that for various reasons, including numerous trips by me and my parents. Loved the upper deck.

The F seats are only available to J ticket holders on the SFO run aren't they? Because no F sold on that leg?

I got seat 1A back from SFO in June - on J ticket, without OP UP. Very very nice, best sleep I have had on a plane ever. Mmmm...

Personal preference is upper deck but have had some friends say they feel cramped upstairs. I like the bins next to the window seats. Easy to put lap top bag and stuff...
