I read in today’s West Australian that Cathay Pacific are increasing flights in and out of Perth to 10 per week starting in November. The article said that there would be three daytime flights per week leaving Perth at 8am. I looked on Cathay’s website but could not see any extra flights.

I certainly hope it goes ahead as I only fly during the day and was thus contemplating an overnight stay in Singapore in both directions for our next trip to Hong Kong and beyond. I was very upset when Qantas cancelled its daytime flights to Hong Kong last March.

Has anyone heard anything more reliable than information from the West Australian?

Good to see CX restores 4 flights per day for Sydney. Must be a seasonal thing where increasing flights for Aussie summer.

Great news. Take note Qantas the daytime flights are popular.

This was reported last Friday in the aviation section of 'The Australian'

I could not find any scheduling details ex Per, so appreciate the information.

Now CX flies 10 times per week.

I am not a QF basher, BUT with only 3 QF flights a week from Per-Hkg, the frequent traveler MUST question QF LACK of commitment for flights ex Perth from to Hong Kong.

Demand MUST be there for CX to increase frequency.

The same question arises ex Perth to Singapore. SQ are three times a day and QF are ? times a week.

It was reported here around a month ago, and I dont think your QF bashing, the situation has been the same in BNE for some time, with the A380 delays along with 787 delay QF are hurting, mind you in both cases QF made the issue worse by delaying deliveries during the GFC.

QF have 14 flights per week & JQ 11 flights per week (4 x via DPS) to SIN ex PER.
With the PER-SIN route being the 3rd busiest international route out of Australia why do QF only run a twice daily A330-300 service?

How do you define third busiest, seats or services? Its not the third busiest by either measure in comarison to SYD-LAX, SYD-AKL, SYD-SIN, MEL-SIN, MEL-AKL etc etc

By Passenger numbers. See the BITRE reports.

International Airline Activity - Monthly Publications

Perth-SIN is not the third busiest route for airlines which is why I asked what datapoint was used, from the perspective of an airline its 4th for Pax for the last full year and 11th for freight, that last datapoint answering the question as to why there are only two A330's on the route.

I am not sure which figures you are using, but the latest publsihed report from BITRE (May 2010) positions it at number 3 for passengers, and number 7 for freight.

I am using the full year figures which places the route at 4th for pax as CNY skews the figures for the 1H, I did get the freight wrong, its 6th for 2009.

For the year ended May 2010 SIN-PER was greater than HKG-SYD

Year ended May 2010
Auckland Sydney 1 380 617
Singapore Sydney 1 078 746
Singapore Perth 918 243
Hong Kong Sydney 916 387

Given the closeness of the figures, sure they could change positions.

Still it is interesting that SQ and CX are able to provide more capacity on the routes ex-PER than QF. There is obviously demand, but QF choose to use their capacity elsewhere, presumably due to greater returns in doing so.

When will these flights be available to be booked ? I can't find them on Cathay Pacific's reservations or timetables.

Cheers
Markh

Aaah thanks, I am looking for PER-HKG in June 2011... It looks like these new flights are only in the system until March 2011.

Will CX136 continue through past March ?

Airlines base their schedules around northern hemisphere summer/winter, new routes/flights tend to have a limited window to ensure there is not too many issues should things not work out.

with the 343 returning to HKG-SYD any idea if this means First is being reinstated on this sector?

I sent and received the emails shown below. I am hoping that bookings pick up and that Cathay Pacific continue with these extra flights. It seems a great pity to me that there are no daytime flights between Perth and Hong Kong.

09/09/2010
Dear Cathay Pacific,
I read with great interest that Cathay are now trialling daytime flights from PER to HKG between November 2010 and March 2011. Congratulations to Cathay Pacific for recognising the needs of your passengers!

It was so disappointing when Qantas dropped their morning flight from PER to HKG. I do not fly at night and thus a day time flight would be perfect for me.

Our next trip to Hong Kong is planned for late April 2011. When will a decision about whether to continue these flights be made?

I would like to make a booking as soon as the decision is made.

Kind regards,
sinophile

Dear sinophile,
Thank you for your enquiry and your feedback.

Cathay Pacific do make regular changes to our flight schedules and services to allow for us to accommodate and better serve our passengers. Due to government regulations, airport services and aircraft availability, we are not always able to meet the desired flight schedules of all of our passengers.

The new service from Perth, is only scheduled for March 2011, at this stage. If this is extended updates will be advised via our website Airline Tickets, Airline Reservations, Flight Airfare - Cathay Pacific International.

To date, the service is not being well supported and the passenger loads conflict with feedback that the service meets the 'needs' of passengers. Hopefully more support will be generated and the service might continue.

kind regards,
Matthew
