Just spotted something I didn't know in the Qantas help pages..

Answer

Can I use electronic noise cancelling headphones on take off and landing?

Yes. Electronic noise cancelling headphones are permitted to be used during take off and landing, provided that the headphones are connected to the audio console.

I get 'pinged' regularly for this.

When the final cabin check before landing is underway, I'm regularly asked to turn off my 'electronic device'. In fact I've already turned off my Mp3 player and plugged my NC earphones into the aircraft sound system. Once I point this out, there's no problem.

I have in the past though, turned off the noise cancelling (it is 'electronic' after all). Now I've read that, I'll be leaving it switched on.

Interesting, Maybe i should print this out to keep with me,, as i have been asked before to turn mine "OFF" and had some weird looks at other times.

This re-inforces to me that the "no electronic equimpment" has very little to do with the Aircraft, and more to do with the Flight crew being able to get your attention should it be required during an emergency,,

As above, if you have NCH on (and switched on), and not plugged to the Audio system, it is very easy to miss anything that is said over the PA system.

During my recent Flights on Tiger ( dont ask ) i was asked to not only ensure they were turned off,, but to remove them from my head during take off and landing. ( seatbelt sign "on" time)
Tiger have no in built Audio systems, so again i feel it was for the above reasons they ask for this.

*** ALSO BE AWARE, If you do have NCH plugged into the Audio systems ( such as DJ or QF) there is no way to turn down the volume of "announcments".
They come through at almost full volume,, and it can HURT ! ******

Do you have a "dampener"? I use noise blocking rather than cancelling head phones (eithe rultimate ears or shure) and use a little connector between the AV system and the headphones. I actually find due to the isolation that sometimes the AV system volume too loud even at the lowest setting...

Interesting - my NC headphones*, and others I have tried, do very little to filter out speech. They do a great job of eliminating engine and aircon noise and background conversation drone but very little to speech such as cabin announcements and people such as FAs talking to me.

When people are talking to me I'll usually slip the headphones off - at least from over the ears - more to reassure them that I am listening rather than through any necessity.

I have once had a FA inquire when doing the pre-landing walkthrough where my headphones were connected. I simply showed they were plugged into the armrest socket.

Richard.

* I do have another NC headset which blocks just about any noise but I would look like a right wally wearing those on a commercial flight.

On BA flights you can't use any head sets during take off and landing even if you are connected to the BA IFE system.

I have a pair of BA WT+ NCH. They have a single point, rather than the double point used on QF. Does anybody know where I might be able to get an adaptor?

**** Smith/Tandy.

EDIT

Seriously this is a forum for frequent flyers, generally with an age about 10 so it is unlikely that seeing **** **** on here is going to cause major life trauma - do we need this filtering/censoring?

but more importantly:

You may be in luck at your local DSE (they are listed on their web site) but my personal experienceis that DSE have been constantly moving away from their roots as an electronics (and components) store over the last few years and more towards a Harvey Norman type Consumer Electronics store.

In the past, I have not been able to get the 2 to 1 aircraft audio connectors from DSE - but I have been sucessful at more hardcore electronics outlets like Jaycar...

Flew down to HBA from MEL on QF last night.
Put my QC3's on as soon as I sat down and plugged them into the IFE.
I was in an exit row, so as soon as the FA started talking about what to do in case of.. I took them off and listened to her.
After she finished, I put them back on, still plugged into the IFE.
The safety demo came next, and as that started the FA who was near me leaned down and told me to take off my headset during the safety demo. which I did.
After it was over, I put them back on which got a real glare from her as she went back to her seat, but she said nothing.
I guess the rules on headsets are still being sorted out.

Do you have a "dampener"? ...

I also use Shure's and an in-line volume control. Means you can have the earphones in the ears and plugged into the IFE to appease the FA's, but with the volume set at 0 you only get sweet silence!

Not much good for emergency announcements (but if I see the person next to me put there head between there knees and kiss there ar$e goodbye, I am sure I will get the idea and do the same), but you can still hear the mumble of the general announcements and turn the volume up at this point.

When I flew SQ a few weeks ago the whole plane was under strict instructions to not have headphones/earphones on at all, regardless of whether they were plugged in or not.

Does anyone know where I can buy one of these from? I found that the A380 is the worst for very loud announcements through the headphones.

Perhaps one the joys of flying Air NZ. IFE is on from gate to gate and you can happily have your headset on the entire time during take off and landing.

Amazon also sell the Shure Level Attenuator Listening Level Controller for USD17.00, and Sennheiser HZR-62 Stereo Volume Control for USD23.42. I find them very good to control volumes as the aircraft ones tend to not be very finely adjustable, and then there is the aircraft announcement issue, as mentioned. I have a predecessor of the Shure.

Korjo now sell one, so most travel goods outlets.

Jaycar used to have one.

DSE also sell a converter from 1 to 2 pin.
