I am about to complete the return portion of a ex TPE CX ticket.

I am assuming when I checkin in syd I will receive boarding passes for both syd-hkg & hkg-tpe sectors.

what will happen if I don't show up for the hkg-tpe sector... given that I have a boarding pass (no checked bags).

IMOE, CX won't check you in for the SYD-HKG flight if you are continuting on to TPE unless you can prove that you have a return ticket out of TPE.
Be prepared.
Suggest you change your last leg date HKG-TPE to later and no show like this.
If you are SYD-HKG-TPE you will encounter some difficulties.

Lets suppose I book a cheapo ow tpe-hkg... can I ask cx check in agent to NOT check me in for hkg-tpe leg?

or in the case he/she does check me in, can I skip the hkg-tpe??

I cannot see how you will get away with only checking in for SYD-HKG flight when you have a HKG-TPE flight following it. Asking to be checked-in for SYD-HKG only will arouse suspicion.

You can be a no-show for any flight you want. Who is going to stop you?

And good luck finding an el-cheapo one-way TPE-HKG.

That was my experience with CX ex-Thailand recently (to Taiwan). I agree it's a risk without a way out of Taiwan.

BTW, good luck in finding a cheapo for this sector... If you want to go down this path, I suggest you find yourself a FF booking from TPE-HKG that is 7 odd-days after you "arrive" in TPE. Cancel it at the right time, and you'll lose the cancellation points.

Otherwise, start playing the game of cancelling a flight. May not be that exciting if they choose to delay refunding the credit card.

I am at the int QP ... and successfully managed to obtain boarding pass only for the syd-hkg sector... I just mentioned that I wanted to clear customs at hkg. I have a 1.5hr connection, hardly enough time to clear customs & check back in.. I guess the agent was lax in checking that part.

I was also not asked about onward / return tix from tpe.
But I still bought a economy return tpe-hkg last night for about TWD 7000 ~ 220 AUD... I lose 1200 TWD if I cancel... which is not too bad.

so atm it is looking ok.

I've done this a couple of times on Qantas. Tell them when you check in that you don't plan to use the last segment, and have them check you in only for the first segment. The company might not like you doing that, but the check-in person will probably appreciate you letting them know so they don't waste time calling for you.

When flying to FRA I was in a similar position, having only a 1 way ticket and no proof of onward travel to my new home (London, which isn't in the Schengen zone).

When checking in, I wasn't asked for any proof. When going through passport control, I wasn't asked either.

Just in case though, I spent ~$19 AUD on a FR flight from Frankfurt Hahn to London Stansted. I've now thrown it away.

Assuming you are an Australian passport holder who resides in SYD, how were you going to return back to Australia if you're flying SYD/HKG on the return sector of a ticket ex Asia?

There'd be nothing to stop you making a booking with a local travel agent in HKG for another return flight HKG/SYD/HKG which you could show upon checkin. A lot of times airlines/immigration accept a flight itinerary (which could be a booking only ie unticketed) as proof you're returning to Australia.

There's nothing to stop you cancelling this booking at any time, all the itinerary proves is that at some time you had confirmed flights for those sectors.

I don't see a problem with asking to be checked in SYD/HKG only. You could always say you've got a meeting in HKG which you now have to attend so will need to reschedule for HKG/TPE for a later date. I hardly think the checkin agent is going to demand to rebook you for this new date - they just want to know what your final destination is so they can check you in, tag your bag & send you on your way.
