I haven't read the full conditions if they are indeed shown online (can't remember), but the last time I booked one over the phone, the agent said that in the event of a cancellation I would have two choices:

1) Take the next available flight, but no guarantee that F would be available (ie: downgrade).

2) Book on the next flight with F availability, but again no guarantee when that would be.

But no, I've never been downgraded - but haven't taken that many. I did have a flight cancellation once though (2 weeks before the flight) and moved to an earlier service with no hassles (in F).

Yes it can happen but I have not experienced it nor have I read that it happens very often. Just make sure you are flexible and don't make the connections too tight.

I missed a connection once in DFW and the AAngels at one of the Admiral's Clubs gave me the option of a confirmed whY seat on the next flight or F on the one after that. No prizes for guessing which option I took ..

Happened to me in MIA as well but missing the connecting flight was my fault. I was due to go MIA-DFW-ORD and they actually put me on the direct MIA-ORD flight still in First Class.

There were a few unhappy campers yesterday as AA were disruptured with the effects of Hurricane Hermine affecting DFW.A lot were losing their upgrades.
With eqipment change you can lose your confirmed seats as we did when our SFO flight was switched from a MD80 to a 738.

I was held over in DFW last year due to severe electrical storms. The connecting flight I was meant to take was cancelled and the disruptions were major. Apparently some people had to wait 48 hours to get rebooked on flights!
I was given the option of taking the next flight to JFK (which left after a 6 hour delay) booked in Y (no First seats available) or having to wait until the next First seat became available. I decided to get reticketed and travel in Y. Points and status credits were awarded for the Y travel but I wrote a letter to Qantas explaining the circumstances that I was booked to travel in First and they credited the points to my account.

I had bookings for LGA-ATL-DFW-DEN-LAX and at Atlanta, poor weather forced cancellation of my flight. I was given choice of waiting for a F seat or a seat in economy. To avoid problems with rest of the flights, I took economy for that sector. Got F SCs (from memory, 360) for all 4 sectors.
