I will be in Bangkok end of the month and wish to do a side trip to Hong Kong and Taiwan...what are the best routings/carriers to use? Both TG and CX look pretty good.

Seems to be a nice selection...leisure trip so using my own $$$ hence low cost is a preference although SCs would be nice but not essential. Looking to spend about 5 days on this trip. I am guessing BKK-HKG-TPE-BKK would be the best route?

Thai Air Asia is on sale at present for BKK-HKG @ $131AUD return

From experience HKG-TPE and vv is one of the most expensive routes in that area.

As mentioned earlier Air Asia is the cheapest and they serve BKK-HKG and TPE-BKK.

If you want SCs and very few QFF points then CX is an option. Sometimes you can get some good deals going to/from BKK-HKG and to/from TPE-BKK. Send an email to any Thai travel agent and see if they come up with a deal travelling BKK-HKG-TPE-BKK on CX.

Doing the exact same thing in November on CX. My routing gives one night in HKG, on a through fare, and 6 in TPE which was the main objective. Booked 2 weeks ago via the CX website the fare in J came in at a shade over 30000 baht, or about $1100 and earns 200 SCs. Not the cheapest deal around but it suited my purposes of getting a few SCs and getting to TPE.

not withstanding the prices also pointed out below, i have done this itin a couple of times; and I found BKK - HKG - TPE was always more expensive than BKK - TPE - HKG (there was certainly no good fare like the 130AUD pointed out below)

For the times of the day that i wanted to fly out of BKK, KLM had a very good fare from BKK to TPE - might be worth checking them out too. I generally fly TPE - HKG on BR (eva) or CI - and find that it's always cheaper than the other way around (also i can never afford CX for the same routes, and you can make your own mind up about CI - I find them to be just fine :o )

hth,

-jeff

EDIT: browski's post reminded me that it's KLM that has the cheap BKK to TPE

You could also consider flying RJ on the BKK-HKG leg in J This would also be good value (AU$340 OW in J) and also gather Status Credits. On a nice A330 as well.

For HKG-TPE, I'd probably fly Dragon.

Alternatively you could also consider BKK-TPE one way or return on KLM. A return flight in J costs about 14000THB which is about AU$490. Halve that for Y. Credit to your Skyteam partner. It's on a 747.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

BKK-HKG and BKK-TPE both seem fine with several options, however HKG-TPE is nasty...approx AU$300 one way Y for a 60 min flight!?!

KLM have some very good fares ex BKK, while CX have plenty of flights but are also a little pricey.

I'm thinking of doing BKK-HKG-BKK and BKK-TPE-BKK as this is both flexible and pretty cheap.

What happened to the CX J SC run for approx AU$600? Was that HKG-BKK-SIN and not TPE?

You might find it cheaper to purchase a return CX Y fare TPE/HKG and throw away the return portion, cheaper than booking a one way fully flexible TPE-HKG usually.

Way too much exposure on public forums. :(

Ex-BKK these are now over AUD1000 and not much better ex-TPE....

Actually load factors in J have restricted the availability of the cheaper fares, in fact they have been so good that CX have put more services on, hardly an issue with forums, CX have had an average load of 83.3% as reported earlier this month, with traffic in J ex HKG having a huge spike, thats taking the specials out.

agreed, it's got nothing to do with forums, and that SIN/BKK via HKG was quite unusual and let's get real, there is not THAT many people willing to position in SIN and fly that far out of the way to get the deals. Same for getting to TPE.

Thanks...you are correct. CX Y return is cheaper than one way - go figure.

Any preference for aircraft - 747/777 & 330/340 available. I'm guessing Y isn't too different no matter what the aircraft on CX?
