Hi all

PNG is ever a centre of excellence for rumor and this SMH article, sourced from aap, has fed something of a rumour frenzy in POM
Qantas PNG flights hurting local carrier

Basically, Qantaslink has offered low lead in fares on the route. PX and CG, who both flew this route daily, have struggled to match them, and both have slashed flights.

Pity, I'd much rather spend monday morning on PX leaving CNS at 7.00 than on QF at [OMG!] 5.45, even if it does come with SCs.

While CG is alleged to be seeking cabinet approval for a merger, PX claims to not be interested. The rumour led to the denial of financial trouble from CG (in full page ads on thursday) reported as lies, damned lies and here's our statistics. Airlines PNG rejects claims of facing financial turbulance | The National.

And on the same day, tacit approval for a merger appeared from government, Transport minister Don Polye having apparently had a fireside chat with the Grand Chief who is supportive
Polye: Do not fear proposed merger | The National

The tacit approval appears to be for a lot of talk over an extended period that may or may not come to nothing.

Not quite sure how such a merger would attract more competitors, CX once flew HKG-POM-AKL, CS once flew GUM-POM and MH once had a weekly KUL-POM service. All these services bit the dust. With two LNG projects ramping up one can already see increasing demand from the US to PNG as well as from Asia to PNG. It presumably wouldn't be difficult adding in a POM stopover on the CS service GUM-CNS.

Doubt it would impact much on domestic airfares as there appears to be nothing very cheap on domestic sectors and there are only limited common routes - CG and PX tend to fly mainly to different destinations.

Meanwhile, PXs second 767 is still awaiting marching orders on the tarmac at POM , and their 787 is still on order...

I could stand corrected. Are they spelling the other 767 from time to time now instead? And alternating the one parked on the tarmac [thinks - have to do a wander up to POM tomorrow to see whats happening ]
