Hi...

If you are a Qantas Club member and fly J Class, do you still get the extra 10kgs? Or is it just the base J Class baggage allowance?

Sorry it seems a bit dumb...it's just I read the website to mean one thing which the condescending QF supervisor at BNE Int'l insisted that i read their website info incorrectly. I re-checked the website after getting off the flight....and I just wanted to know what the general understanding is....

thanks...

The qantas website used to just list the separate extras and hence was a bit unclear. However if you now look at the baggage information on the website under frequent flyer and qantas club members it lists the extra allowance in a table. Under that table there is a note that says the additional allowances can't be combined.

Whoops, but that wasn't your question as a J flyer and QC member I reckon you get both.

I'll post a link once I get to a computer unless someone else does first.

Australian Domestic* on Qantas flights (excludes QantasLink)No restriction on the number of pieces

Total dimensions of each piece must not exceed 140cm (54in) Business: 30kg (66lb)
Economy: 23kg (50lb)

PLUS:

Platinum, Gold and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club Members receive additional free checked baggage allowances:

Qantas Club Members* Domestic Australia, trans-Tasman and international routes (except for The Americans as listed below) Additional 10kg (22lb)

Fly - Baggage - Checked Baggage

In answer to the question; yes you get:

(1) The qantas business class baggage allowance - for many routes now 30kg

PLUS

(2) Any extra allowance due to being Qantas Club, Silver, Gold, Platinum

[Note that Qantas Club extra allowance cannot be combined with Silver, Gold or Platinum - in this case you pick the higher of the 2- eg a Platinum Qantas Club member would have the business class allowance (30kg) PLUS [better of 15kg Platinum allowance or 10kg QCLUB allowance] 15kg = 45kg.

A problem arises at checkin when travelling on an upgraded ticket from economy to business - the computer does not seem to recognise the upgrade for the purposes of the free checked baggage calculation and some manual override is needed - lazy chekin staff can't be bothered doing this and new staff don't know how to.

Thanks everyone for you response.

I feel a bit more sane & justified because I thought the same too - total checked in luggage allowance would be 40kgs.

I was within this last night at BNE Intl. The lady at the check-in counter was really nice & helper. She thought I should have been allowed more as well.

However, the Supervisor refused to allow my luggage through saying I was only allowed J class weight and no Qantas Club allowance. He, just gave me a condescending look, then smirked saying, no, no allowance etc and he wouldn't allow weight.

Luckily the lady at the check in counter helped me a little and only I had to remove a few things and then some into hand carry.

I seriously suspect either racial discrimination (this is not the first time it's happened on QF..unfortuately I was stuck flying them).....or....this is the only type of powerplay the short slimy looking supervisor can get in his life.....

You should get an additional 10kgs as a QC member.

Domestic Australia, trans-Tasman and international routes (except for The Americans as listed below): Additional 10kg (22lb)
For The Americas: 1 additional piece

Fly - Baggage - Checked Baggage

As a Qantas Club member, you're entitled to an extra 10 kg (weight concept) or 1 piece (piece concept) when you fly with QF (marketed and operated).

If the flight is a QF codeshare (i.e. not operated by QF even though your ticket has a QF flight number on it), then the extra weight allowances don't apply.

All pieces of baggage, irrelevant of your weight allowance, must be 32 kg or under. So even if your allowance is 40 kg, you can't check-in a 34 kg bag (you would need to have two bags and split the weight so each bag weighed less than 32 kg).

Notwithstanding any of the above restrictions, then you should have been entitled to your 40 kg (assuming the flight was not going to America and hence weight concept is applicable), which is 30 kg J base allowance + 10 kg QC bonus. The supervisor stuffed up; it is easy to forget QC members get extra baggage allowance (cf. QFF status members), but still embarrassing.

What was the flight number on which you were travelling? If it was QF operated and marketed then indeed you should have got the extra; if it was another flight ( e.g. CX to HKG or a QF codeshare on another airline such as QF389 or was another airline's codeshare flight number on a QF flight) then no, no extra allowance

Not all checkin staff have to ability to override excess baggage so it would need to be done by a supervisor or someone whose signon permitted that. You would hope that the checkin person would ask the supervisor to do that without you prompting them. Might be an idea to carry around a printout of those allowances (yes I know you shouldn't have to) so that it can't be disputed by a supervisor.

If the supervisor has "issues" like the one at BNE Intl don't lose your cool just ask politely (through gritted teeth) to speak to the duty manager. It's not like you're asking for a favour you just want what you're entitled to.

The flight was a QF flight.

Well, I didn't lose 'my cool' because I was too embarrased. Actually, the check in staff was really good - she knew I was entitled to it and went to ask the supervisor to authorise the override.

She actually asked twice and the supervisor just smirked and refused to even listen. He wouldn't even speak to me..just smirked, looked me and up down and gave another condescending look. Even the check in staff was embarrased because she apologised as well.

I think being Asian also impacted this. I've read about this guy on other forums. It's not the first time he's done this to people.

It's really sad for Qantas and I feel quite disappointed. Despite being, born in Australia and quite often getting bad treatment on QF because of skin colour, I've tried to support them as an expat...maybe it's seeing the flying kangaroo ...

After this incidence, maybe no longer.

A complaint in writing would be worthwhile. It may have no bearing or response to your incident, but enough complaints about a particular "problem" and QF might eventually act. Building evidence, if you like.

Disgusting if that (powertrip or racism) was really the issue.

If it's a simple misunderstanding, re-education is required anyway re: allowances.
