Biggest Airport Rip-Offs?

And this morning, BAC decided to block out a sizeable portion of the pax drop-off area near BNE QF Dom "to ease congestion".:confused::confused::confused:

Traffic was back to the Int Terminal as a result of this "trial" which was so "widely publicised" that not even cabbies, radio and TV knew

Saw them putting out the barriers last night at 6PM when I popped in to collect some wayward bags from last weeks travels - what a bunch of fools. Why can they not build stairs/walkways over the roads as the first part of the carpark redevelopment, the situation has been a joke for years.

You can subsrcibe to the mailing list which details these changes (not saying that that is widely advertising something, just letting you know for frequent travellers which may be helpful). The email details all the latest roadworks and comes every few weeks / whenever there is to be major road closures.

Go to www.brisbaneairport.com.au and go to major projects section, or you can email

And no, I dont see how providing LESS dropoff area will ease congestion.

The traffic at Brisbane domestic was not helped when they moved dropoff/pickup to the other road instead of were it used to be around the taxi ranks. That change means that everyone has to cross the road hence creating the problems with the crossings. If drop off and/or pick up could still happen on the footpath adjacent to the terminal then at least 50% of those using the terminal would no long have the cross a road and hold up traffic.

To BAC's credit, they are redesigning the Dom with ramps similar to the Int.

Can you imagine the chaos that's coming during this construction?

Ooooooooooooohh yeah. Don't tell me about it. :(

I hope they really consider separating taxis/limos/coaches/buses from private cars. Would save a lot of hassle.

Moreover, their design still has a fundamental flaw to it. You'll still get traffic hold ups due to people crossing the road. (Which is made worse when there is no traffic warden there.)

No imagination needed, the chaos has been there for years already! The way things are going, park short will be relocated to an area adjacent the INT terminal, along with the hire cars. At the moment BNE has the title for one of the shortest walks to the hire cars, bet that wont last.

Paying for trolleys at *any* airport is a rip-off. True using wheelie cases does reduce the need for this, however I often travel on business and this will often consist of 5-6 bags.

Last time I was in MEL domestic, the trolley hire was $5. Whilst many may bag ADL, at least you don't pay for trolley hire - $10 in my pocket is better than the airport coffers!!

Don't be a sucker and pay for luggage trolleys at MEL domestic; what I always do is just take a quick stroll to the international arrivals area, where there are always lots of trolleys just lying around, and "liberate" one from there. Given that luggage delivery at MEL tends to be on the "leisurely" side, you usually have plenty of time to do this.

Thanks for that tip! Will send my assistant on a trolley run next time we land there.

Hi All,
This is my 1st post so please be gentle.
On the flip side to the rip offs, I have found Narita Airport in Japan to be very reasonably priced, with the majority of prices being equal to outside the airport, including when airside.

happyflyer,

Welcome to AFF.

I'm glad you mentioned that. Boston is another that offers good value. They actually have signs up that spell out their price comparisons to off airport sites.

Personally I use Skyliner from Narita to Ueno in preferance to Narita express, Skyliner is half the price, and I miss Tokyo Central and change of train. I change to JR at Ueno which is far easier than in Central for my onward trip to Takasaki, Niigata areas.
Don't touch the Taxis, they're deadly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with others that SIN offers very good value for money... IMHO its about the best airport overall in the world :)

Similarly agree there isn't a lot of value around SYD in any respect.

One of the worst value meals I ever had was at JFK waiting for QF108 to depart last Oct - about a 6 hour delay. BA lounge very busy, little in the way of food on offer and so I thought I'd see what things were like downstairs and happened upon a 'pub' type place near the gate. Food & beer took an age to prepare and about very, very poor value for money.:evil:

If I can find the name of it I'll post it.

Narita A/Port No2 to the Mercure Hotel situated on Narita Rail Station, $A40.
That's rich !!!!

Cheers Dee

I guess the exchange rate comes into play too! We caught a taxi back (after having walked from the subway station to the temple, boy did we mess up there, what a long walk!!!) from Kinkakuji Temple back to our Ryokan and it wasn't too bad. We were getting 105 Yen to $1 though :p
