It would be nice if QF could do that with some of their older workhorses...:p

Cool clip, a time lapse of start to finish would be interesting indeed!

Now if only AA could do the same to the 767s, 757s and MD80s......

QF 737-400s will disappear over the next couple of years..so no chance of a complete cabin makeover.. QF 737-800s already have the new boeing interiors.. and our newer 737s being delivered in the future will get the enhanced interior/seating/AVOD (as per A332 domestic/ 737-800 trans tasman ).. AA 737-NGs are just being upgraded to current QF 737-800 standard!! so no big deal!! and as soon as the 787 comes online late 2012 ( yes... my fingers are crossed too!!) QF 767 will be phased out as well.. all good things come to those that wait!! i agree the video is cool.. shows how much work goes into aircraft assembling..and travellers take this for granted!! take a step back and marvel at the fact that you are flying through the atmosphere at 800-900ish kph in a metal tube with 100-200 of your closest friends!!

763's were all refurbed in 2007 and getting winglets now.
CRJ's getting F seating-I think all done.
757 refurbs have commenced and will accelerate in 2011.
The new 738's I believe are to replace the MD80's.
So your wishes are granted.

I wouldn't hold your breath - in 2006 when they had 300+ MD80's - AA committed to replacing 30 MD80's per year (this was when oil prices were increasing).

They still have 240+ MD80's in service. I would say the current oil prices and economic situation in the US will have increased the life span of the MD80's beyond 2016.

I was more referring to the 767's.

Funny enough I don't mind the 734's provided it's only on a short hop;)

AA would like to be able to hold onto them until Boeing deliver their next generation narrow-body aircraft. But that is not going to be in the 2016 time frame, so they will have to do something, at least as an interim solution.

The reason's for AA keeping their MD80's just got less as explained in this FT thread-
AA MD-80 Converted To Freighter - FlyerTalk Forums

And heres the article-
Company says low value of passenger aircraft makes all-cargo sales more likely

Aeronautical Engineers is formally launching a freighter conversion program for MD-80 passenger aircraft, saying the aircraft’s declining value now makes it a likely candidate to move into all-cargo service.
The Miami-based company says the plane “will be converted in large numbers in years to come.”

I have been hearing this about the 737-400s for years and yet I still manage to find them. I didn't think that QF had any more 737-800s arriving into the fleet to replace these aircraft?

I was a bit disappointed to see the finished product as its the same as the QF 737-800s. I was thinking that it was going to be the new Boeing 'Signature' interior (like the B777).

Like others here, I'll be happy when AA MD-80s are gone.

Perhaps you were thinking of the 733 which was phased out, the 400's are now slated for the same treatment:

New Boeing 737-800
Since September 2009 the first three of a new fleet of 31 x 737-800 aircraft configured with 12 Business and 156 Economy commenced flying. The first 6 aircraft will operate on selected routes between Australia and New Zealand and subsequent deliveries will support the existing domestic 737-800 fleet from 2011.
The aircraft features a new seating design styled by Marc Newson and state-of-the-art, on-demand inflight entertainment from Panasonic. Business Customers will enjoy Qantas' exclusive wide seatback design with a 37" seat pitch and 22" width between arms. Seats have a 10.6" in-arm Inflight Entertainment touch-screen, extendable leg rest with fold-out footrest, PC power and USB port, coughtail table and ergonomic cushions. Economy customers will have a 9" seat-back Inflight Entertainment touch-screen, individual USB port, four-way adjustable headrest and ergonomic cushions.
Inflight Entertainment in both cabins has more than 300 entertainment options: movies, TV shows, CDs, library, games, audio books, Q radio channels, children's section and seat-to-seat "chat" messaging, It also includes Qantas ' exclusive interactive Lonely Planet Guides as featured on the A380.

Yeah +1 with getting rid of the MD-80's, I wouldn't exactly mind if the B757's got retired as well..

What is wrong with the B757? It is just a B737 on steroi_s OR a B767 without the steroi_s!

Because it's a B737 on steroi_s and a B767 without the steroi_s...

Not a fan of narrow bodies, and an extra long narrow body is still a narrow body...

The big problem I have with the AA B757 is the F seats are bloody awful. I haven't flown on one of the refurbished 757s, but I'm guessing that they're much nicer. On the other hand, I actually quite like the MD80s ... the F cabin is v quiet due to the position of the engines.

Any idea as to when all the 400's will have been retired?

I think it will be a little while yet before all are gone as some are only 14 years old, however they move to QF link or freight.
