Hello! After a four month stay in Perth, I will be flying back to the U.S. this weekend. I'm flying Qantas from PER-SYD, arriving in SYD at 11:50 AM. I'm then taking United from SYD to LAX and then onto IAD, leaving Sydney at 1:50 PM. I can find lots of information on here about what to do when taking the same airline the whole way but am unsure what to do when switching airlines. I'm assuming I will not get my BP's for the entire trip when I check in at PER but will my bags be checked all the way to LAX? I know I have to switch terminals in SYD but am unsure if I need to gather my bags, etc. etc.

Any insight you could give me would be much appreciated! I'm stressing out over this already!

Thanks!

QF PERTH Domestic terminal should have a dedicated International connections check-in counter and they will check your bags through to LAX on United. Boarding passes for UA will be issued at the UA check-in counter in SYD. You just need to keep the baggage claim check tags handy with the bag weights to show UA staff at international check-in.

The transfer is much easier without bags. Just transfer between QF SYD domestic and the International terminal using the free QF airside Bus service. This is complimentary to all QF SYD domestic arriving and QF SYD departing pax who are departing on either Qantas or non-Qantas international carriers, or arriving into SYD on non-Qantas carriers such as UA. For QF Domestic pax you just show the QF staff at the Domestic Transfer counter (opposite Gate 2) your baggage claim checks and then it's a walk downstairs to the waiting area for the next bus to depart for the International Terminal. Once at the International terminal you walk upstairs to UA check-in counters to receive your boarding pass and then it's on through to customs and security. For Business or Star Alliance Gold pax you get access to the Air NZ lounge - very nice too :D

Hope that all makes sense/helps.

With only a two hour connection time between scheduled landing on QF and the UA departure, I would not waste time with your transfer to T1 when you land.

You mean "don't waste time" as in.... go straight there? Or what?

That is a question I had as well, can't see why anyone would waste time pottering around T3 (QP access perhaps?) ie. most people go straight to the transfer point and get on the transfer bus ASAP. I guess the only other thing is hanging around in the food joints and shops in T3, but no need for this as good options in T1 as well.

Correct, two hours between connections does not leave much time for unexpected delays etc. (possibly could have worded my previous post better)

No worries. I don't plan on dilly-dallying around much, anyway... hopefully it'll all work out. :)
