Every time I ring up SIA I cannot understand the lady, her accent is to strong, just want to find out how many points I need to fly from Melb return to New York business with my wife, I currently have 180,000 points, also don't understand what the letters mean. J, K? I probably am fairly dumb, but i have been obsessed with collecting points for the last 12 months and just want to know how to use the bloody things, the calculator is no help either!!

Melbourne to JFK return is 140 000 points each. K/economy, J/business, F/first.

Spend some time in Singapore and you will soon get used to the Singaporean accent la.

Hi dannyboy, welcome to AFF.

There is not a simple answer to your question, so that may explain your difficulty in getting one. The best place to look is actually the award charts on the Singapore Airlines website.

There are three different options:

1) The easiest - a Star alliance partner award - on United Airlines, Air New Zealand and/or Air Canada across the pacific, and then United Airlines, US Airways, Air Canada or Continental across North America.
Simple. 140,000 points.

2) A Singapore Airlines Saver Award.
This is only available on one service a day on SQ to/from Melbourne connecting with a flight to New York via Frankfurt. Availability restricted.
180,000 points booked over the phone, or 153,000 points booked online (ie 15% discount).

3) A Singapore Airlines Standard Award:
Way too many points for you. Available on any flight out of Melbourne on SQ, then connecting to the direct service from Singapore to New York (Newark) or via Frankfurt.
360,000 points booked over the phone, 306,000 points booked online :!:

Oh of course all the points I quote are for one passenger only. Double them to take your wife!

Its a world of abbreviations out there, there is a thread on this website that comprehensively lists 99.99999% of them, the useful ones at least.

Sam will dig it out for you, he's good at that.

Cheers

Nice complete answer Dajop which brought to my attention the direct SIN-EWR flight on the A345. For the benefit of the OP whom may have sufficient points for that flight the taxes and charges per person on a return redemption would be $754.31 per person.

dannyboy you can also just go straight to the Redemption Booking engine which will allow you to run the scenarios without deducting any points. This will also give you an indication of availability on the dates you are considering.

Playing with some dates and flying into JFK, it is possible to find a Saver Award that will take you in Business to Singapore and the in First Class to JFK on the 747 via Frankfurt for 204,000 points booked online as per Dajop's #2 suggestion. For the extra 50,000 pts per person you would have many years of credit points on the home front.

Also, if you are travelling that far, remember that you have stop over options with SQ allowing you to break the trip.
