New Qantas iPhone app is out...

My phone is NOT a jail broken phone - it's a Telstra 3Gs 32GB iPhone - stock standard from Telstra.

When I originally downloaded the app, it was a legit copy (grrr for even suggesting different), yesterday, it updated "for optimal experience". It now has additional features such as viewing my booking etc

There is no online check in as I said in a previous post.

Visit qantas.com in Safari and see if it's any different. I've noticed the WebApp has been updated substantially recently, so it's probably just related to that (at a guess).

I'm still waiting for this phone-based check-in though ;)

, it updated "for optimal experience". .

Mr!, my iPhone says this every time i open the qantas app (phone bought dec 09) and when i try qantas.com.au in safari it goes to the iphone version anyway.

I'm not sure it has really updated recently - the qantas site i access via iphone hasnt changed since i first accessed it in dec 09 (it was one of the first apps i downloaded).

Agree, no online checkin / bps etc.

FWIW i'd like to see a FF summary and recent activity page in the iphone QF page (rather than just bookings) and some of the accessibility (seat selection / OLCI etc). Hopefully QF will do this wen they come to rolling out RFID tags etc for their FFs.

Mr!, I don't think there was any question as to the legitimacy of the app you have (and you'd have to ask what purpose there is in stealing a free app!), but apparently there's an unofficial application as well, for jailbroken iPhones.

I think what's happening here is this: the QF iPhone application (when it was available) was simply a custom browser for the QF mobile site. Ergo, when the site is updated - so is the app.

I'll be actually impressed if and when they release a useful app that stores itineraries and allows check-in, etc. Until that happens, I don't see the point in it. :)

I see the slight update - being able to check details through FF number which is a major enhancement. Apart from that the app is fairly useless and will be until I can do the following:

- Run slightly faster than a slow crawl (running this on a iPhone 3GS)
- Select seats online after booking
- Check in online
- Get push notifications of flight changes
- Manage my FF points/SCs

Then it will be useful.

Reviewing the iTunes store, there is no official QF application at all.

In respect of the screenshots displayed at AppstoreHQ - I would suspect that app is simply a link which fires up Safari, and the QF website delivers an iPhone-enhanced version to the user as notzac suspected.

Looking at the QF Mobile website (faking my user agent in Firefox) and looking at the source code, an iPhone/iPad enhanced version of the site is being returned for users of that handset. Everyone else just gets their bog standard WAP version which has the same features - it just doesn't look as pretty.

Their implementation of the iPhone site version requires the certain libraries from the Apple Webkit to be displayed properly on the device.

That's exactly what I said earlier ;) The App is just loading the Safari WebApp. Hence probably why QF removed it from the store (it was doing nothing). It's easier to just create a WebClip or whatever they call them from Safari and store it as a Shortcut Icon on one of your screens:)

In case it wasn't mentioned but the qnatas on board magazine clearly has an advertisement to say mobile check in is a available (along with a graphic of an iphone, but perhaps that is like the news ltd 717 picture) just go navigate to the mobile website. But it doesn't work for me. Has anyone been able/offered to do mobile check in?

As for the qantas App, has anyone used the igoogle download app. Not exactly ground breaking but I'd like to have that functionality in the iphone app.

Have used the iGoogle 'app' (prefer it was called a widget, because that's really what it is). It's OK for at-a-glance monitoring of your points and progress, offer and updates relevant to your profile are nowhere to be seen.

Other than that, its smells of a marketing gimmick to remind a very small portion of customers who use iGoogle continually about their QFF membership. Its a shortcut to marketing that really won't deliver a dime in value.

On the functionality of an iPhone app for this/similar purpose - it already exists. Look at Quota, which will give you current balance information, status as well as recent points transaction history. Also allows you to keep up to date on other services such as mobile and home phone accounts, ISP's, etc - so it's value isn't limited to a single function which gives it a great value proposition.

Tried the iGoogle app, and other than having to sign back in every so often, it’s not bad, shows me where my points are coming from, as if I didn’t know, and might save me from logging into EDR or Qantas to see if shopping points have been added weekly or not.

Had a look, looks interesting, the site is very vague though and I’m not sure how it would be able to check my bank details ;)

Just called it an app because i couldn't remember the real term. widget reminds me of apple os, of course.
Thanks will check out Quota when back home on the weekend. (bit hard now as i'm on 80% of data allowance with 8 days to go)

No doubt by you telling it the internet banking password. One reason for me to not use it.

Doesn’t everyone use those random code generators for online banking now, I know I do. Can’t log on or transfer money without clicking a button on a device I have been given and it spitting out a code to enter.

For those who are interested- I have a screen shot bellow of different user agents of mobile devices . On the left is nokia and blackberry and on the right is iphone.

Looking at the code behind the page - the iphone version is a lot more complex using javascript to get those fancy transitions .

You must be with CBA, because I don't have a one time key for ANZ, WBC or NAB. Or no everyone doesn't use random keys

HSBC actually. Have a clicky-thing for each country I have an account in, gets confusing ;)

I have accounts in 3 countries other than Australia..... I don't desire OR require a "clicky-thing" or SMS. if I need to do an EXTERNAL transfer I need to enter an extra code. Simple.... And it means I don't need to worry about anything except my memory.

Hence the reason we deployed SMS One time password at WBC.

Most people have mobile phones. The mobile phone (sms) can be used as the second factor of authentication for risky or transactions over a certain amount. Yes it is susceptible to man in the middle attacks - but the likelihood is low.
