Can I use QF points to upgrade a QF flight, whilst accruing on AA

Hi all,

Thanks to those who have posted on this site, I've seen the benefits of the AA program over QF, so for my next business trip (a RTW DONE4) I've booked most of the flights on AA flights/codeshares and will take the Platinum challenge. I expect to complete the challenge on my first leg SYD-LAX-MEX unless someone tells me otherwise? (AA codeshares on both). I've submitted my AA FF number on the booking.

From LHR-SIN I'm on QF32 and I have to go to work on the day I land, so I'm thinking that I may as well use some QF points to upgrade from J to F, if possible. My question is can I use my QF points to upgrade to F, whilst accruing miles on AA for that flight? I'm only QF Silver so I understand that I'm towards the back of the pack when it comes to upgrades. But I'm keen to start accruing on AA vs QF.

Thanks,

Knasty.

I have upgraded SIN-PER with QF miles while posting to AA. It posted properly.

I seem to recall a much earlier SYD-ADL ODU which did not.

Check the FF number on the BP if you get lucky.

Keep in mind you only get points/miles for classed booked so still would be earning J
To my way of thinking that would be possible

When I do this, my process is to book as normal quoting my AAvantage number in the booking. Then go to my QF FF account and follow the process to upgrade an eligible family member. Enter the booking reference number and surname to locate the booking. Then apply to waitlist the upgrade noting the relationship to the eligible family member. Strangely enough, they do not include "self" in the list of eligible family members so I normally select "Father" (well, I am a father after all). The only "problem" I once had was somehow QFF double-deducted the points form my account. A phone call to QFF had it fixed very quickly.

So as far as QFF is concerned, you are upgrading an eligible family member who has no QF FF status. This keeps your QFF number away from the booking as far as points earning is concerned.

Thanks NM,

I do have the same name as my father, and I am a father, so I guess I am doubly qualified. Just hope they don't take double the points....

It was not a problem to sort it out and gave me an opportunity to suggest "self" might be a suitable addition to their pull-down list if eligible family members . That only happened once out of 10 or more upgrades processed in this manner.

When you say 'normally' do you mean booking a DONE4 with QF here in Oz?

Am planning a DONE4 right now, but, on the advice on this forum, am planning to go ex AKL through the AA WW Desk then paying through AA in NZ. Similarly looking to upgrade on QF32 so your way seems great

All my DONE4 fares have been purchased through our corporate travel centre. Most have been issued by Qantas (using 081 ticket prefix) and at least one was issued by AA (using 001 ticket prefix). The purchase agency or issuing airline should make no difference to the upgrade process.
