New Mobile Check-In

Had a look and couldn't see this mentioned anywhere else...

Did MEL-SYD yesterday... upon check in there was a new barcode kind of scanner on the check in desk. I asked if this was for OLCI BP's and was told it was for something new. I pushed a bit futher and she said soon we will be able to get BP's on cell phone. (I'm assuming iPhone/Blackberry/Anaroid etc.).

Then upon arrival in SYD when exiting the date the normal BP scanners had the same new scanner beside them. The new ones however had a QF logo and note over them to which said something along the lines of: "For use with future mobile boarding passes".

Now, no doubt some winner on here will see the same thing today and remember the note word for word (or take a photo) and comment below to say I was incorrect (as is quite standard for people posting on here to help out). But it said something along those lines.

Anyone heard more about this?

Would not have even expected new scanners need updating.

The current ones take almost anything!

Accidentally printed my boarding pass 4 to a page the other week (on a high qual colour laser).
So it was really tiny.

Took it to Business Lounge saying, I think I might need a new Boarding pass, they tested it and it worked. At the gate took a few gos but still worked.

So would think a much bigger logo on a phone screen would work fine.

Maybe the reflection from the mobile device screen would be an issue with current scanners?

I know notzac has successfully used a bar code displayed in the pdf on an iPhone at the boarding gate to be boarded. Whilst he was using his iPhone he did have a proper boarding pass as well, but the gate agents let him try. Worked fine!

Until they get the little-slip-of-paper-for-boarding-at-the-gate up and running, it wouldn't be rolled out though.

Everything is being updated for new Mobile Check-In at the OP stated and of course the new Airports of the Future (Microchip, etc) being rolled out this year and into the next.

Re: Mobile-Checkin, you will able to check in on your phone between 24hrs and 45 mins before your flight. Once you have checked in, you will only need to scan the phone at the reader, where you will receive a slip that will be physically used on board. It will be available on all Qantas flights, and selected Qantaslink Flights.

Eventually it will be available at Sydney Terminal 3, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Gladstone, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Ayers Rock, Alice Springs, Darwin, Hobart and Launceston, Adelaide, Canberra, Broome, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Port Hedland, Newman and Paraburdoo.

IMPORTANTLY: Seat selection will not be a function of OLCI, so it would be important for the passenger to preselect before check-in (as you know can now be done). I am not sure how this would affect pax trying to get a better seat on OLCI. I am not sure if you OLCI from the actual Qantas page on your smartphone, and then maybe obtained a boarding pass from the Qantas App that that would work, but you would be checking in twice? :S

Attached is a pic of what the boarding pass may look like. Seems it will run from the Qantas App for iPhone platform on the iPhone for example.

HBA, thank god!, I hope this works on Nokia phones, not just iPhones, one would think that it goes through the phone's web browser.

It should. Other carriers do it fine (either they send a MMS message with the barcode and a textual representation of it, or they send a plain text message with a URL that you access which then displays your boarding pass).

While convenient, it can also be frustrating. I used mobile check-in on LHR-DUB with BMI last week, and had to hand my phone to 3 different people (BP check/photo before security, photo match before UK Domestic section, BMI staffer at Check-in. And then needed to be shown upon boarding as well). Having the paper print out would assist a little with this - but only on the boarding side of things.

I'd much rather have a paper boarding pass or the RFID implementation IMHO.

Im not sticking my iPhone through that scanner thingo - anyway, it wouldnt fit... imagine the scratches as it gets scanned backwards and forwards - then the little red light will go on and it will beep then I will have to go to the counter - nup, not me!

Now, I'm having trouble making my iPod fit into my CD player - the draw wont shut - any ideas? Thinking about it, I had similar problems playing them modern CD things on my record player....

Unless you're one of the forgotten Silver cohorts who should be able to preselect seats but won't be allowed to until May.

Funny thing is, I should be gold by the end of may, so maybe that can be my work around until qantas fix their IT system so that it works as advertised

So how does this work when you step onto the aircraft ? Hand over your device and so they can work out if they need to direct you to the near / far aisle - then hand back ? That would be a bit clunky I would've thought.

As mentioned, a slip of paper akin to a receipt is printed out that becomes a boarding pass for you to use. This either happens at the gate, or at check-in, either way, you have a slip of paper by the time you get to the end of the aero-bridge to hand to the FA.

Right, that make sense, but why would one need a piece of paper for a DOM flight, they don't check boarding passes like in the U.S., pick one or the other

My BP is always checked on boarding in Oz for DOM flights. I am then directed to my seat.

Of course Australia is different how security is done. But your mobile phone would need to be checked multiple times - checking in baggage, scanning the barcode at boarding, on-board the plane for seating purposes and also potentially to access the Qantas Club. (and yeah I realise the Qantas solution is likely to print out a 'docket' at the gate for boarding purposes which removes one of those phone checks).

Handing your phone to various people (They don't tend to want you to hold it under the scanner???) is a frustrating way to get through various checkpoints - ala my experience with BMI I discussed above, and why in that type of situation a paper boarding pass is easier.

Because when someone sits in your seat incorrectly you can show them your slip and you can look at their and re-direct them to their correct seat.
