Hi everybody, i'm flying on QF29 MEL to LHR then connecting with BA to EDI, i was wondering will my checked baggage be forwarded to my connecting flight or do i collect and clear customs at LHR?

I've received conflicting information regarding this.

Thanks in advance!!

Based on my experience flying to Manchester etc and you if are transferring to a domestic flight? Flight number BA14**
Yes you will need disembark, collect baggage and clear customs. Check in at the T3 transfer desk, drop your bags and then transfer from terminal 3 to terminal 5. Sorry not sure where the transfer desk is in T3. There are buses and the train goes from T3 to T5

If your flight number starts 87** then your flying from London City airport or 29** flying from Gatwick. Then you need to transfer from T3 to those airports.

Have a good trip  when are you flying you might be able to catch other members and maybe some lounge access if your at the right time.

I'm heading out on the 24th, can't wait!!! It's my first international flight so, pretty excited to say the least.

We're departing domestically from T5, should be a joyous event negotiating through LHR, but will be all worth it once we're in EDI.

Thanks for your input, very much appreciated!!!

My last 2 experiences have been the opposite - bags sent all the way through to Edinburgh. As you are transiting through Heathrow they should tag your bags to EDI and you just need to following the Flight Connections path from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5.

But I seem to recall trying to confirm whether this would be the case whilst checking in at Sydney and the Qantas rep wasn't sure even though they tagged the bags to EDI, so I am not surprised that you are getting mixed messages. Disappointed though.

In other words I agree with Dave Noble and also note that he types faster.

As a through booking, your bags should be checked through to Manchester

In this case, you do not need to collect bags at LHR; just follow signs to Flight Connections for immigration and continue to your onward flight. You will then collect bags in Manchester.

The information from BA's site (link removed) should be approriate

That is a very valid point, and the link you posted merely backs that up. I just have one question though, how do i clear customs in Edinburgh if arriving via a domestic terminal?

Thanks for your input, very much appreciated.

For those arriving on an international itinerary, there is a customs point. The lack of green stripes on the baggage tags indicates that the bags have not arrived on a flight from within the EU

Thanks Dave, you've put my mind at ease.

Have done the same route many times. Both on same itinerary from MEL-EDI and from MEL-LHR (with QF) with a separate BA booking to EDI. Never had a problem either way checking in at Mel to get bags/boarding passes to EDI. Once in London, just follow the flight connections signs to T5. At T5 flight connections security, they'll give u a new BP (as T5 needs a special bar coded type apparently). Then it's a case of just following the signs to the T5 departures area/lounges.

At Edinburgh, your bags will come off at a different carousel from the others - very end of baggage hall. All bags that originated outside EU will arrive at this belt. Never seen any customs here so you'll avoid the hassle that non-EU passengers seem to have (think the passport stamp for non-EU may be done at T5 - but never seen any long queues) or any customs hassle.

Hope this helps.
