Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

Bus Services from WSI to to Parramatta CBD, Sydney CBD and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport have been announced. Commencing 25 October:

  • WSI <> Parramatta $45 Return Adults, 30-45mins
  • WSI <> Sydney CDB $80 Return Adults, 45-60mins
  • WSI <> SYD Airport $90 Return Adults, 60-75mins
I could not find a timetable in my quick search, but their FAQ states:

How does the shuttle schedule work with flight times?

Our timetable is synced directly with flight arrivals and departures at WSI. Super Shuttle WSI services run in line with scheduled flights, so you never have to wait long after clearing baggage or before your flight boards.

Do you operate 24 hours a day and 7 days a week?

Yes. Because WSI Airport operates 24/7 without a curfew, Super Shuttle WSI runs express services around the clock to align with early morning, daytime, evening and late night flights. If there is a flight arriving or departing WSI, we will run the Super Shuttle WSI service in line with it.

On flyertalk there is a famous thread where a bus used to earn status credits on QANTAS.

Any idea how many status credits we will earn on the WSI-SYD bus?

*tongue-in-cheek*

For solo travellers perhaps but for a couple or family I’d dare say Uber would be cheaper and would definitely be my option. I can’t remember the last time I’ve used a shuttle bus to/from an airport

I can believe the 45-60 mins Sydney CBD to WSI in non peak times, but in peak hour this could blow out to 90mins easily. The M5 can be diabolical at times and you still have to get through inner city rds/streets to get onto the M5.

The SYD to WSI is also an interesting one, it has to go via Central Station/CBD first (SYD-CBD-WSI or WSI-CBD-SYD), its not a direct service. The more direct route which involves no back tracking would be WSI-SYD-CBD/ CBD-SYD-WSI, but understand this would blow out travel times to/from the CBD.

When the new Western Sydney metro opens (early 2030's), you might be better off getting the metro to Parramatta (20mins from the CBD) and then getting a bus. It will be quicker than the train from the CBD to St Marys and then getting on the St Marys to WSI metro.
For anyone living on the North Shore/CBD/Eastern Suburbs/Inner West, getting to WSI takes some logistics and time if not self driving/taxi/ridesharing.

Presumably they can use bus lanes where availble.

I'm gathering this may route via the M4, rather than the M5.

According to Google - map-accessed travel times for weekdays and weekends at various points in the day. I mentioned bus lanes would be used, so to treat like a taxi run

Day / Time WindowEstimated Travel TimeTraffic Profile & Routing Notes
Late Night / Early Morning
(8:00 PM – 5:30 AM daily)
40 – 45 minutesToll-free M12 to M7 or standard motorway links are entirely free-flowing. Since WSI operates 24/7 with no curfew, this is the standard speed for off-peak flights.
Weekday Daytime Off-Peak
(9:30 AM – 3:30 PM Mon–Fri)
50 – 65 minutesModerate baseline traffic. Taxis see normal highway speeds on motorways, with light bottlenecks building only as they approach the immediate CBD grid.
Weekday Morning Peak
(6:00 AM – 9:30 AM Mon–Fri)
75 – 90+ minutesSignificant delays occur heading eastbound on the M4 or M5 entry points toward the city. While inner-city bus lanes help the taxi slide past some local road queues near the CBD, they do not circumvent heavy commuter congestion on the primary western motorways.
Weekday Afternoon Peak
(3:30 PM – 7:00 PM Mon–Fri)
70 – 85 minutesWhile the heaviest congestion during these hours is westbound (heading out of the city), eastbound traffic into the CBD still encounters bottlenecking around major city interchanges.
Weekends
(All day Saturday & Sunday)
45 – 55 minutesGenerally smooth transit via the motorway network, outside of isolated delays near major sporting or entertainment events in the Inner West or Olympic Park precincts.

Doable. Opal app reckons 1h50m bus to leppington then 2 trains. fare about $25 adult or $75 for a family of four.

Right now Uber is quoting 1h 5m and $125 for uber x WSI>SYD T3. Opal wins on price but not time or convenience.

As for the super shuttle its timetable gets it from the stop at Central Station to SYD airport in 15 minutes inclusive of drop off time at Central. That would be a neat trick at the best of times.

Agreed, their timings are fanciful. And if their plan is to run buses to suit departures/arrivals of specific flights (not really sure how that works anyhow), then how much buffer do they provide?

If you knew there was a service say, every 30mins, you'd be able to figure out how early you wanted to be, and then allow extra for traffic.

But if their service is simply " connect to flight XY123", to me that seems like not having control on something I should be able to decide for myself.

Realistically there's too few flights to run a frequency schedule at the moment
