Buying Qantas top-up points with a bonus: Worth it?

Just got 100k points + 60k bonus and redeemed for two PE seats on QF76 between Xmas and new years. Worked out roughly roughly the same as two one way economy seats. Felt like a decent deal.

I haven't thought much about buying QFF top-up points (actually never thought about it), but as I'm a bit short for a couple of trips I'm contemplating, I just looked at the current offer, and I'm tempted. I won't be getting any CC sign on bonuses in the future.

1. What's people feeling on this; would be redeemed for international J. 150K pts for 1.82 c/pt



Looking at MEL-CGK, 68,400 points+$380. Converting points, that's $1,625, Vs cash fare of $3,330 when I'm looking. Thats the sort of value I'm used to with, say aeroplan, but I'm surprised Qantas is offering this. Am I missing something?

2. The other thing I haven't been following is Points club, and its impending demise. I currently have 25K points towards PC and I need 125K more points before December. Where would the above purchase get me, and what will happen with the changes in the program? My QC anniversary is the end of February.

That's not what I'm saying. The wine is 1.84cpp (or less if you're PC or PCP), and you get the wine BUT the points don't land immediately. The topup points are 1.82cpp.

RE PC/PC+, the 120k limit doesn’t apply to points purchases, so the entire amount counts. Purchase 150k pts and that’s instant PC and you’ll earn SCs on that MEL-CGK flight.

BUT, the QF Wine option is better value if it’s not urgent to get the points.

Also, QF Hotels with a 3x bonus points can provide good value.

@MELso , @torks @SYD - thanks. I'd need 6.25 cases to get 150,000 points, costing $2,812, but like you say, you get the wine too. Couldn't take that much Blue Pyrenees (I'm drinking much less wine these days, and better quality ). My younger self wouldn't recognise me.

So buy 2 x wine = 50,700 points + wine for $920 incl delivery
So then buy 100,000 points (80K + 20K bonus) = $2,192
= $3,112

Still thinking of buying all the points, again, unless I've coughed up the calcs.

If you're not PC/PCP, the wine effectively costs $30 a case over buying points (delivery is free) and includes some decent booze (the Richardson Reserve Cab Sav is nominally '$150' a bottle wine).

But if you have no other ways to dispose of the wine, it may be more convenient to buy points.

I agree (regarding Aeroplan - I've scored some good deals from that program too) - but even the above is a pretty good deal.

Don't worry too much about the c/pt - if you're getting a business class seat for half the price of a cash fare by buying points whilst on special, I'd say it's good enough. Of course you won't be getting the full SCs but you can't have it all.

With that being said, I've just got a new credit card and buying some points would count towards my spend criteria.. Hmm.

Agree re Aeroplan, and the cost would probably be less than that as I've held so many points there for a long time - but I've yet to find availability when I've looked, or they are night flights out. I'm sure its there, but I'm looking at a more-complex-than-usual itinerary (for me, on points) and want some options.

There are some decent whites with bonus points but you need to ferret around to find them and unfortunately QF “enhanced” the filter to make that less easy…

As for Pinots, send those to @Captain Halliday and the points to me!

Seems there’s been no price inflation since March 2022

$3,999 for 225,000 points (1.77cents/point). Better than usual I guess but personally I'll only ever contemplate if I run out of credit card signup bonus offers.
