hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information.

fWIW it's now been over a month since I met the spend criteria to get Gold. But my status with my chosen airline remains at Silver, suspect it'll only be updated (or maybe even only processed) on the cards anniversary date next week.
Just to update, the anniversary date has ticked over, and not a single message from either HSBC, Star Alliance or the airline I'd chosen about status change...

So an email has gone out to everyone… status is ed in detail, and will be honoured!

If you have met the required spend by 18 November, and if your status anniversary is AFTER that date, even next year, the status will be extended from the anniversary date.

Eg… meet spend by 18 November, but your card anniversary date is July 2027, status will be granted for 12 months from July 2027 (until July 2028).

So there you go! pretty sweet deal :)
Just wanted to double check @MEL_Traveller: My card was issued in Nov 2025, and in early Jan I selected Air Canada for status, which is valid till 31 Dec 2027. I am happy with this and my only question is this: is this end date going to stay the same for me? Unfortunately I cannot reach the 38K threshold in the next few months, so I have given up on any hope of further extension beyond 31 Dec 2027. I am very keen to get an alternative to this card though - does anyone have any ideas :)

So I'm really annoyed for a number of reasons. I have qualified for Gold with $48K and pushed a heap of things through and could have not bothered and spent $38k

Now my anniversary is 11/12 so that means I will only get SA gold until end of 2027

Bah Humbug

Exactly my situation and I think you’re spot on unfortunately. The only saving grace is we don’t have to pay an annual fee for the privilege?

I think that’s right.

Aeroplan is generous in that it works by calendar years, so you can get up to two years worth of status if you qualify in January.

Star Alliance / HSBC have stated all status will remain in tact as awarded by the airlines. So your end date should stay exactly the same (December 2027, although this year and last they actually extended that status to Feb - or was it March?. No guarantees they’ll do the same this year, but you’ll have at least until December 2027).

Even with the credit card closed, Air Canada soft-landed me to Silver. Which unfortunately didn’t seem to help with call centre priority, but i think you get a couple of benefits like baggage and a lounge pass or something… haven’t explored because don’t fly Air Canada!
