AirAsia is increasing the number of weekly flights from PER to DPS from 25 to 35 per week from December 2026

Some of those extra AirAsia passengers will come from former Jetstar customers who do not appreciate being gouged $32 to carry a cabin bag onboard on a Jetstar plane from February 2027.

I'll take JQ over an Indonesian based carrier any day

I am already thinking of workarounds to avoid this JQ fee on cabin luggage.

1. My old army jacket has four large pockets which can carry phones, chargers and books.

2. I can move the rest of my cabin luggage to my checked in bag.

Melbourne to Seoul is one that surprises me, perhaps they can’t get slots.

Korean is running its seasonal service this peak. Pricing has been pretty high for Seoul flights, even last minute Jetstar flights have been eye watering.

India is an interesting one, it’s obviously low yield but the volume is definitely there. Last minute can also be fairly pricey to India. I think they should test the water with a Neo from Perth next year.

It's most likely aircraft. They only have so many aircraft in fleet and the whole fleet is going through refurbishment right now. I imagine if they have more planes, we would see more ICN, more India, maybe even more JP routes.

Even more other SEA routes. KUL is interesting because theres a lot of competition on the route that I'm not sure if JQ can fight in the route, if anything KUL might be a QF route if they decide to go there in the future.

Bring back MEL-HNL or SYD-HNL. I don't care which. Would be nice to have a route to HNL that is reasonably priced. Helps break up the flight to mainland US for those that want that. Great place to visit too.

I don't think there's likelihood of that. HNL (well Hawaii) is insanely expensive now even if you have a $0 flight ticket, I bet one week will cost many time the cost to almost every other JQ location they currently fly. Singapore and Tokyo are probably the only long haul JQ destinations that are more expensive and even those will be cheap compared to HNL.

I have a large jacket with several zipper pockets. I call it my Rex jacket. Only way I can could get enough cabin baggage to BWT when I worked in Burnie.

From the perspective of QFF, it is better to fly from CNS because of more status credits and 2 hrs shorter flying time which means faster turnaround.

Taipei would be a good one actually. No LCC fly on that route so no competition for JQ. Though it would have to be implemented right. I wouldn’t bother if it included a CNS stopover like some of the SYD-Japan routes.

Yet CI and BR have been operating to BNE for 23 and 31 years respectively. CI also fly to SYD and MEL and Starlux will be flying to SYD soon. Perhaps most of the traffic is coming from TPE?

It really annoys me that direct flights from Melbourne to Seoul are so limited, Korean Air only operates them from December to March. They’ve just announced they’ll continue this schedule from December 2026 to March 2027, and it seems clearly geared towards Koreans escaping the winter.

I would’ve thought there would be enough demand from Australians wanting to visit South Korea to justify at least one direct flight a week from Melbourne year-round.

If Jetstar ever offered direct flights from Melbourne to Seoul, I’d happily fly with them just to avoid having to transit somewhere.

Especially considering that four different airlines are competing on the nonstop Sydney to Seoul route. You'd think at least one of them would take a chance on Melbourne.

I notice that Jetstar International has been prioritizing Brisbane. Lots of subsidy money there I suppose.

I appreciate there is twice as many South Koreans in Syd compared to Melbourne (50K vs 25K) but come on, at least have a weekly direct service in Melbourne...

Cairns to Tokyo to XLR will free up one 787. 4 weekly frequency right there for MEL-ICN.

Korea is definitely hot at the moment, loads are good as is cargo. Got a few people here at work who have just come back, they went JQ via BNE

Perhaps the new Trinity will launch a Melbourne run.
