Vietnam or Singapore Airlines to Hanoi?

SQ will through check baggage whether single ticket or separate tickets if SQ >> SQ

If you mean SIN-SGN such that it is SQ >.VN, then yes as VN has an interline agreement with SQ
To clarify, the whole return leg is CGK-SIN-SGN-MEL with CGK-SIN-SGN on SQ and SGN-MEL on VN (Transit only). Would SQ check the baggage all the way through to MEL given the flights are on separate tickets with separate carriers? I don't plan on clearing immigration in SGN unless i'm required to in which case I will need to book the earlier SQ flight into SGN to account for long immigration wait times.

Technically yes SQ will through check to VN for SGN-MEL flight as SQ has an interline agreement with VN. Additionally some SIN-SGN flights are actually codeshare with VN
Each baggage tag can also hold 4 consecutive sectors which is what you have

However the problem arises if something happens to the SIN-SGN flight causing you to miss your SGN-MEL flightr sometSGN-MEL flight . In this situation, you may have to enter Vietnam. This requires a Visa which is required to be purchased before departure to Vietnam

Some suggest buying a Vietnam visa just in case

edit....Or something happens to the SGN-MEL flight

Hi. Planning on traveling J to Hanoi in early October, and considering Vietnam Air (direct) or Singapore (longer, but tried and tested). Any recommendations as I've never travelled Vietnam air before? Will likely stay in north/central Vietnam and would also appreciate any recommendations regarding places to go/stay. Only have 8 days and don't want to try and cram in too many places. Thanks in advance!

A bit late to this thread.
Now almost 2 years back but we thought VN fine for our flights from MEL to/from Saigon (in PE) plus internal flights in Vietnam.
If it is of any use to you, we used a Hanoi travel agent to arrange our land content. She organised accommodation, drivers and guides plus a couple of nights at Ha Long Bay on a very fancy boat. The agent was recommended by another AFF'er and it worked out well. Contact can be provided if desired.

Agree with @Quickstatus re visa just in case also I would stump up for Fast Track at SGN if you have to do Immigration- can be an absolute chaotic zoo!
