Melbourne Airport has unveiled a planned $4.5 billion expansion of its international terminal.

It includes:
  • Expanded check-in hall with high-tech, common user baggage facilities
  • Five new aircraft stands (capable of accomodating five widebody or eight narrowbody aircraft)
  • Expanded terminal footprint with improved waiting areas, lounge facilities and retail offerings
  • Expanded baggage reclaim with extra baggage carousels and additional space for border agencies
  • Expanded waiting area for meeters and greeters
Preliminary works on the first stage of the international terminal expansion will begin in September.

Aaah, five stands, does that now mean more likely to have bus rides between the plane and the terminal?

Cost prohibitive but MEL would be so much better to be like ZRH with a satellite terminal accessible by people mover to cater for long haul flights.

It's very much needed, so a good thing. But what a pain to endure yet more years of construction disruption at Melbourne Airport. It's been continuous now since about 2020.
