Looking at buying Aeroplan points for a trip to Middle East( Jordan and Egypt tour) . Melb to Doha return in J class on Qatar/Virgin looks reasonable as Emirates and Etihad have dymanic pricing .Looks like availability 110K each way per person in October when I need them . If points take 72 hours to arrive , then am I likely to miss out on the flights ? Never bought points before so bit nervous about this and anything else I should know about Qatar?

I managed to get business tickets to Doha with Virgin/Qatar with the Aeroplan points .
I rang Virgin to get seat allocation (with the VA Booking ref no) but was told to go to Qatar website . Virgin gave me the AirCanada booking reference number which of course doesn't work on Qatar website . Any suggestions what to do to get seats ?

Try using the Virgin australia app and add the booking with the VA ref

Using the App , I can see the bookings but once I go to "select seats" I get an error.
Sorry there I believe there is long running thread on this issue but I can't find it on the forum .
The only way I found to select seats on the VA flight booked through aeroplan is to contact Virgin Australia by phone.

I first made a dummy booking on the Qatar flight and got through to the seat selection page. I noted the available choice and wrote down my preferred seats… then called VA to have them secured.

Nothing works on the VA website or app for the flight if issued through aeroplan.

VA’s booking reference was different to the Air canada/aeroplan one.For my booking I had two booking references… one for air canada/aeroplan which worked for all the star alliance arrives in the booking, and then another for BA, which I got from the aeroplan call centre.

It’s a good idea to get that booking reference because in DOH they can find your booking using the aeroplan one.

With the current up to 100% bonus points, I'm "lucky" and my offer is only 80%

Any ideas why ?
It seems to be completely random.

I’ve missed out on the max offer during various promotions even though:

  • I have bought points in the last promotion
  • I have not bought points in the last promotion
  • I have/have not redeemed miles or tickets
  • Have/have not had status
And basically any and every combination of the above, and it’s still random.

Sometimes your email might offer 80% and when you log in and go to the points . com page the actual offer might be higher. But that too seems random.
