Credit Card Offers 50,000 bonus KrisFlyer miles with new HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card

aeroplan status runs annually Jan-Dec. So because your status is guaranteed for 12 months… the way they do it is give you the rest of the year your qualify in AND the year after.

So if you qualify in Dec, you’d get Dec plus the whole year after. But kf you qualify in Jan, you get Jan-Dec AND the whole year after.

So best to qualify early in the year to maximise your status period
so is it possible to sign on , get 2 years and discontinue card after 1 year? I think no
I guess the advantage with AP is get 2 years as you describe but with KF you only get 1 year even if you renew the card?

If you spend $48k, that will then continue your gold on KF for year two, and subsequent years as long as you spend $48k.

There’s an annual fee as well of $499 for years two onwards.

Your status will cease as soon as you cancel the card. Or at least that’s the rules, for some on here it has been instant, for others there’s been a bit of a lag,p. But filling the rules, yes, as soon as you cancel your status gets zero’d out.

$48000 spend what does that convert to for KrisFlyer miles?
First $3000 spend each month gets 1 star alliance point. Anything more than $3000 gets .5 of a point.

Then star alliance points convert to airline points at a rate of .8

Let’s say your spend was exactly equal across the months, that’s $4000 a month spend = 3000 points plus 500 points = 42000 star alliance points. That converts to 33,600 KF points or aeroplan points etc.

Oh I get it now (I think )

In both cases you need to renew the card and pay the annual fee to get y2 but for KF you also need to spend $48k in y2

I have I got that distinction right?

Do you think this is a good rate?

Do you think this is a good rate?
I dunno!

There are guides and valuations on AFF… i don’t have any credit cards that earn points - except for this one. And i only spend $2k a month on it. so i’m the last person to ask what’s good value!

I have non points earning cards that come with zero foreign fees and no annual fee. That works out cheaper for me than any points i could earn.

perfect! spot on!
Thanks

this explains why KF are offering a sign on bonus payable over 2 years !
KF offer 25000 points sign on and 20,000 more for year 2

No sign on for AP but no need to spend $48000
I guess the question to be asked is spending $48000 worth it for 45,000 points

It’s plus the 33k points you get from spend as well… so around 2 points per dollar. Which is pretty good?

But all of that 48k needs to be domestic spend, otherwise there’s the hefty 3.5% foreign transaction fee.

Does Singapore airlines send out a physical KrisFlyer cold card in the mail once one meets the requirements to quality for KF gold?

A quick heads up regarding HSBC - they are looking to sell off or close their retail banking operations in quite a number of countries including Australia - I'm not sure why as I know that they have a large customer base amongst the Australian community.
They’re looking to focus on their core operations in Asia/UK. While they’ve dumped a lot of markets, even Canada (which I’d guess is similar to ours), in the US they kept Premier/Private clients. Don’t necessarily think they’ll do that here, but you never know. Seems strange that they launched this, niche product only a few years ago if they were considering leaving AU, but who knows, a lot can change in a few years (and NAB might keep it - I say NAB, they seem to be buying everything right now).

You need to spend $48k in year one for it to renew in year 2, just to clarify.

No, only PPS Club get actual stuff now. I was KF Gold for a few years not from this card, and years ago (about 10) I got a physical silver membership card and luggage tag, but never anything from any year of Gold.

I recently got approved for this card.

Reading the website and T&C document, it looks like there may be an opportunity to get more bonus miles in lieu of KF Gold.

For existing KF Golds/PPS, there is this offer printed on the website:
Existing KrisFlyer Elite Gold or PPS Club members can receive a bonus 40,000 Star Alliance Points⁶ (in lieu of Gold Status) when you spend $4,000 or more on eligible purchases² within 90 days of opening your HSBC Star Alliance credit card (that’s 32,000 KrisFlyer miles once converted). Simply nominate Singapore Airlines as your status airline and confirm you are an existing KrisFlyer Elite Gold or PPS Club member when prompted.

6. To be eligible for 40,000 Star Alliance Points, you must apply and be approved for a new HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card and spend $4,000 on eligible purchases within the first 90 days from account opening. You will receive 40,000 bonus Star Alliance points into your Star Alliance Rewards account within 30 days after reaching the qualifying spend, nominating Singapore Airlines as your status airline and confirming that you currently hold KrisFlyer Elite Status when prompted via the Star Alliance Rewards portal. Offer is limited to new HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card applicants only. Existing HSBC customers switching from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held a HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card within the last 18 months are not eligible for this offer. The conversion rate of Star Alliance Points to KrisFlyer Miles will be confirmed at the time of selecting to convert points via the Star Alliance Rewards portal.

Part of me thinks you can "confirm", but be in error. ;)

The T&C document has this:
3.1 Welcome Bonus KrisFlyer Miles: To be eligible for the 25,000 welcome bonus KrisFlyer miles, you must:
a) Apply and be approved for a new HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card during the Campaign period above.
b) Qualify for KrisFlyer Elite Gold status through the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card by:
• Meeting the HSBC eligibility criteria to ‘fast-track’ to Star Alliance Gold status, (See Terms & Conditions here which includes spending $4,000 AUD or more on eligible purchases in your first 90 days from credit card account opening and;
• Activating your Star Alliance Rewards account via the Star Alliance Rewards portal here and selecting Singapore Airlines as your Status Airline (linking your KrisFlyer membership number in the process) within 90 days of credit card account opening.
c) Issuance of ‘fast-track’ KrisFlyer Elite Gold status (or Star Alliance Points in lieu of Gold status) under the Star Alliance Rewards Program T&Cs available here is a precondition of receiving Welcome bonus KrisFlyer miles.

It doesn't say you have to take KF EG if you aren't gold already.

However the page to make said selection says this.

32k KrisFlyer miles to me, would be better than KF EG.

Thoughts? Or is it just wishful thinking?

This /does/ work, but whether it'll work alongside this offer, I don't know. Last time I held this card, I forwent the Star Gold and took the 40k points (SUB and on spending $60k), which went to 64k AC points (plus those from spending).

I would think as long as you set SQ as your airline, you've fulfilled the offer requirements...
EDIT - see my later post, T&Cs seem to have sewn this up, you need to actually take Gold.
EDIT 2 - maybe not, see this and save it (sec 3) - https://www.singaporeair.com/conten...cal/au/hsbc-star-alliance-bonus-miles-tcs.pdf

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm only interested in earning KF miles only. Don't have any membership nor desire for joining the program for any other *A airlines.
Do you have a link to the T&C document for the offer that you applied for at the time?
Would be interested to see if they had the option of choosing *G vs 40k points.

No probs. I was Star Gold when I first took it, so had no desire to become double Gold (and it's lost if you select SQ when already SQ Gold). There was no specific offer when I signed up, just the "normal" status offer, it was poring through the T&Cs and discovering that points were an option that spurred me on actually!

However, a few things now that I've been having a look:
  1. EDIT - but wait, see the bottom of this post - "...to be eligible for 25,000 welcome KrisFlyer bonus miles, you must meet the HSBC eligibility criteria to fast-track to Star Alliance Gold status, activate your Star Alliance rewards account, select Singapore Airlines as your status airline and receive Krisflyer Elite Gold." This indicates to me that you have to actually become Gold to receive the bonus points. Link (SQ Website)
  2. "I previously earned Gold status under the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card (“fast-track to Gold”) welcome offer. Can I achieve another Gold status via welcome offer again?...As a KrisFlyer member, if you have previously been granted KrisFlyer Elite Gold status under the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card (“fast-track to Gold”) welcome offer, you will not be eligible for another KrisFlyer Elite Gold status under the welcome offer to the same KrisFlyer account. This includes if you have at any time previously cancelled your HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card, reapplied and been approved for a new HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card." This, to me, indicates that you only get Gold as a SUB with SQ once, ever - I'm banking on the fact I was never granted Gold status here. This is very restrictive, and only applies to SQ (so I would, in future, go with AC, personally). Link (Star Alliance Rewards Website)
  3. "...Under the Campaign terms, to be eligible for 20,000 anniversary KrisFlyer bonus miles, you must also have received the 25,000 welcome KrisFlyer bonus miles offer and received anniversary KrisFlyer Elite Gold. Anniversary KrisFlyer bonus miles will be awarded within 6-8 weeks of meeting this criteria..." (EDIT: Following may indeed be possible, save the linked T&Cs below) No taking the 32k points (40k Star Alliance) by skipping Gold then requalifying, taking the second lot of 32k plus the 20k half of the SQ SUB - they've thought of that. Link (SQ Website)
If you're not after status, sounds like it'd be better to just take the 40k Star Alliance points. Personally, I'll take the status and SUB, since I've also lost VA status recently (I also had VA Plat last time I had this card), but don't really need it since I don't fly Y/W on SQ. But I'm willing to "pay" 7k SQ miles for a year of Star Gold, I guess haha.

Either way, SQ have clearly thought about the T&Cs, it seems - whether they enforce them I don't know, but to find out is a gamble. What I think is new is the "once per lifetime" SQ Gold under the signup bonus (assume you can continue renewing it by spending the $48k annually, including in future holdings of the card), which seems a bit stingy, especially as SQ's fixed 12 months is pretty tight to begin with, compared to, say, AC. If ever choosing an airline, def read the T&Cs thoroughly, as a fair few of the airlines have different procedures, not just SQ.

EDIT: Contradictory statements, I would save this, and this changes my strategy https://www.singaporeair.com/conten...cal/au/hsbc-star-alliance-bonus-miles-tcs.pdf
