this is half job related, and im sorry if this is in the wrong section
but for work i have to fly to London return
about $1600 at least
BUT for Brits to fly here its only about $800 - return

my question is, being aussie and flying from aus and back, am i allowed to book a ticket in the UK to save myself a heap of cash?

Welcome to AFF iHooT!

You can most certainly book a one-way fare to the UK and a one-way or return back from there for less if you like. I’m not sure if you’d need to book the return trip before leaving or not, but there’s no issue with that.

Re: Help needed please?

Thanks very much Sam :>)

my travel agent told me i had to book international flights in Australia :S
but when i jumped google uk and found that the same flight is way cheaper i just thought i should book it over there instead of paying a lot more here.

i always thought it didnt matter a bugger where in the world u booked a ticket, as long as u turn up to the airport with your passport and your ticket paid for.
thanks very much for clearing this up :) just saved myself basically a thousand bucks hahahahhahah

Re: Help needed please?

You’ll still need to purchase a ticket from here to the UK to get over there. But if you book a return LHR-SYD-LHR say, then the next time you head back it’ll be cheaper, assuming you know when you’ll be heading back next.

And as I said, I’m not sure if you’ll need to have your return ticket to Australia booked before you leave Australia or not. Sometimes a country will need to see you’re going to be leaving eventually!

Other more senior members may be able to clear this up more, or correct me. :-|

You most definately need a return sector booked prior to departure here if entering on the 90 day visa.

I have a feeling the OP is somewhat confused, just because you see flights to Australia ex. London for $800, doesnt mean if you book with a UK agent that you'll get ex Australia for $800, thats a price specifically for ex London and has no bearing on the price you pay whether you book here or in the UK.

In fact, 99% of the time, you'll get a better price booking with an Australian agent for ex. AUS flights just due to contracting and volume.

Thought so, but wasn’t sure, some places you don’t need an exit flight, some you do.

I thought that might be the case, but I just gave the short answer.

If the OP, iHooT, were to have to return to the UK after this trip, a return bought from the UK might be beneficial, but to buy a single from here, and then a single from there, probably wouldn’t yield the savings desired.

Can be worthwhile if you need to fly back and forth to the UK regularly, but I suspect no real savings to be had if you only need to make one round trip.

We tried to get Aus - UK (return) fares through UK family. We used the excuse that the UK family were paying for it (we were). Surprise surprise the fares were dearer Aus-UK return, than UK-Aus return. When my wifes sister (she has a very good Friend who owns a TA in London) asked why, they said that the market forces were greater in the UK/EU market, than the Aus/NZ market. In other words smaller market less force, bigger market greater force. In the end it was easier to buy in Aus.
