What is there to do in Devonport (and surrounds)

Hello friends,

Looking for recommendations on what do in Devenport and surrounding areas for about a week. Happy to hire a car and drive around.

Plan is to take the spirt of Tasmania on or around 01 nov.

Cradle mountain is well worth a visit with a walk around Dove Lake.

The Tulips at Table Cape (Wynyard) may still be in flower and also worth a visit, while in the area there is a Lobster pond and cafe at Flowerdale that is unique to NW Tassie.

A trip down to Strahan and a cruise on Macquarie harbour inc Hells Gate, Sarah Island and up the Gordon River is a must do, if the apt railway is running (Strahan to Queenstown) it is a must do, and there is a museum at Zeehan. This could be a few days and maybe better to stay in the area a couple of nights

A day trip to Stanley and a walk around the Nut (walk up or take the chairlift) and high field house historic site

A casual AFF meetup in Burnie for dinner with Steady is always good…..

You could do 2 or 3 nights at Cradle Mtn (ideally a cabin at Peppers) then 3 or 4 at Strahan. Harbour cruise, wilderness railway, Ocean Beach.

But book soon!

There is also a lot to do in the near vicinity of Devonport. Anvers Chocololates
Christmas hills raspberry farm near Deloraine. Across the road Van Diemans creamery for great ice crem.
Close by Ashgrove Cheeses and cafe
Deloraine for antiques but if their in spring the cherry blosssom is a great display.
Outside Deloraine the 41 South salmon farm for delicious hot smoked salmon and salmon rillettes. they do very good platters with their salmon products but also local delicacies often with very good smoked meats.
Sheffield. the Town of Murals and a great pie shop.
Mole creek for the worlds best honey but the pub also serves up good meals.

Latrobe. used to be the best place to see platypi but an extreme fllood washed away the old shale mine ponds where the platypi were easily seen. But the Mersey River at the bridge in Latrobe they can often been seen towards evening.
Gilberts bakery and Bellys bistro in the RSL for good value sustenance. The Owner of Bellys was one of the very few who grew his restaurant over covid and after. More than doubled in size but was often booked out.
Lots of good little walks around Latrobe..

Devonport. Bass strait museum
Home Hill the home of Tasmanias Only Prime Minister and his wife the first female elected an MHR as well as first woman cabinet minister. Ironically also one of the first 2 women selected by the ALP to run in a Tasmanian election.
Don river Railway. A lovely ride up beside the Don river in an old train. sometimes a steam engine.
Lillico beach reservation for little penguins in season

December January don't miss the cherries.

And finally just once cross the Mersey River by ferry.

Eat curried scallop pies..... Roe on or off, doesn't matter. Ask @drron who has the best in his opinion., if of course you do like that sort of thing.....
Really, what others have said above. Stanley and The Nut, as stated above, in the other direction, George Town.
Realistically you could drive around Tassie in a week. Launceston is only an hour from Devonport, and it's a very reasonable road now. Port Sorell is worth the trip, just to drive around, Ghost Rock Wine on the way there is highly recommended, as stated above.

Do you have to stay in the vicinity of Devonport? If not, hire that car and do some exploring. Are you into bushwalking? If so, there are some amazing walks up that way, lots of mountains and waterfalls, particularly around the Great Western Tiers. As others have suggested, Cradle Mountain is pretty close and worth a visit.

If you’re more of a coastal person, there are wonderful rocky walks along the north west. Drop into the Wynyard visitor centre to grab some geo tourism booklets and visit Rocky Cape. South of Devonport there are some magical caves around Mole Creek. The weekend of the 1 Nov is also the art and craft fair in Deloraine, if you’re more of a knitter than a caver.

In Devonport itself, visit the regional art gallery. It’s one of Tasmania’s best small public galleries.

Sadly, there is no ferry anymore... the spirit of Devonport has gone.

I did a great walk along the coast the other day from near the airport and ended up in East Devonport. I was staying at the Novotel which I could see just about a stone's throw away (literally!) but it was a 1 hour walk back...

There is another great walk that takes you up into bush, around by Aquatic Centre, near Don railway and back into town. Look on all trails app. I really enjoyed that one.

Reliquaire is a fun shop in Latrobe if you like quirky gift things and I do like a stop for free samples at Anvers chocolates.
