hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

So I've got a January 2025 signup date which meant Aeroplan gave me 2 years of Gold. I'm wondering if I switch programs for my Jan 2026 renewal if I will end up with Gold on both programs or will the remainder of my Aeroplan get revoked.
If you spend $48k to get gold, you should be able to select it in another program? My friend has aeroplan gold and kris silver, both through HSBC. So selecting silver for SQ didn’t cut the gold on AC.

Ok, into last month of Year 1 and have Air Canada Gold with the *A card. Got OK benefits flyin Aegean, but no use elsewhere :(, not even a VA lounge. But I do like having at least some status. This was the first since Feb2020.

I dont want to pay the $495 fee and will cancel in November before Year 2 starts. Would only achieve silver (if I swappee to KF) with a 30k spend anyways.

Reading thru posts, is it still likely I will hold AC Gold until end of January 2027, even with the card being cancelled, or will AC drop off?

Any real world experience appreciated. Thanks

by the rules, as soon as you cancel, your status ends.

However this seems to be inconsistently enforced… some report status immediately ends, others have had it remain open. I’m not sure there’s any confidence in the outcome.

The main benefit for keeping the card open wouod be if you are buying points. Almost instant access to the aeroplan call centre is worth the $495 (less of course any points you accrue during the year!)

Thanks, looks like i will be another data point. Not a biggie, just a nice to have. It was good to use the status with Aegean, several sectors for Europe 2025. Now must get to finalise blog 4 months late.
