Combining baggage allowances for 2 passengers when checking in together

We have booked reward flights in J for both of us for next year with QR (SYD-LHR) and SQ (ZRH-SYD) and both airlines have a 40kg baggage allowance in J.

We plan to travel with 3 bags. Do the airlines usually allow you to pool the allowance for 2 passengers so that the total weight of the 3 bags comes to no more than 80kg, with each bag being around for example 25 kg?

I thought I would post here rather than in the separate QR and SQ forums since this may be a question that could apply to multiple other airlines too.

Seems like it would be completely OK. If both are weight based, you would be both under the limits anyway, let alone if you pooled the allowance (usually never a problem if you're both on the same booking).

Was there anything that you might have been scared of that prompted you to post this question?

Only time I've seen ever found pooling didn't apply was on RyanAir a few years ago. Cue swapping items between bags and much moaning

Well, they are a LCC........

What was your experience? Same booking and didn't let you pool allowance? That bites.

Honest told, I don't know if this is something written into baggage policies or just a courtesy. In decades gone by, it used to be nearly universal to allow pooling of allowances. Even strangers on the same flight would help you out. Needless to say, this was during a time when baggage charges weren't huge profit centres.
