Jetstar - Seoul-Sydney-Melbourne Transfers

I have been searching for hours but can't find concrete answers on the transfer process at Sydney T1.

I am flying with Jetstar from Seoul to Melbourne via Sydney T1.

I understand that international to domestic transfers with Jetstar require me to collect luggage and check-in again at the domestic terminal. However, my flight from Seoul (JQ48) and the connecting flight from Syd-Mel (JQ62) arrives and departs from the T1 international terminal.

So my questions are:
1. Has anyone else done a similar Jetstar connection through Sydney T1 and is 2.5 hours sufficient transfer time?
2. In the case of arrival and departure within T1 international, does Jetstar check luggage all the way through to Melbourne or do I need to collect and check-in the luggage again?
3. Can you run me through what I need to do for the transfer once I arrive in Sydney. Do I stay air side when I arrive at Sydney airport or do I need to clear immigration/customs, collect luggage, check-in and then enter through immigration again (or is the domestic flights at T1 through a different entrance)?

Connecting international flights though? It’s not entirely clear if it means JQ-JQ as well as JQ-partners.

I expect it will work like any other domestic-international or v.v. Jetstar connection. You collect your bags and check in for the next flight as normal. You better hurry, if JQ62 isn't cancelled, check-in closes 1hr before departure.

But it’s international-international…

Anyway, check-in at ICN will advise where the bags need to be collected. If only tagged to Syd then the OP will clear immigration and customs there. If tagged to MEL presumably the OP will stay airside and clear formalities in MEL.

(As long as the flight isn't cancelled, and you are shifted to an actual Dom flight)

Edited… also the QR flights to ADL via MEL… you don’t get off in melbourne and clear immigration. You do that in ADL.

You've pinned down the issue I have perfectly.

I can't figure out whether Syd T1 transfers to Mel is deemed international-international or international-domestic, which I guess determines whether I need to clear immigration in Syd or in Mel. Really confusing.

Well… nothing really you can do about it now

Wait until check-in at ICN, they’ll see the connection to MEL (all on one ticket right?), and simply ask them where the bags are going… SYD or MEL. That’ll determine what you need to do in Sydney, and where you clear immigration.

If you din need to collect bags in SYD, 2.5 hours should be ok. You need to be back at the JQ check-in one hour before t(e next flight… so 90 mins should be fine!

Guess I'll just need to wait until check-in at ICN and hopefully get some clarity then. Yep, booked through to Melbourne on the one ticket which is why I was hoping Jetstar would check luggage all the way, but not so sure now.

That's if they're aware of the potential options, in this case, at Sydney. I've had my bags checked through to CBR (via SYD) by EY and check in staff helpfully assured me that as my bag is checked through to CBR I don't collect it in SYD. Advice duly ignored.

Third party agents are generally not across these finer details and are prone to give the wrong info, especially at an out port.

i’m not sure where you’re going to be able to check with the staff in SYD… maybe as you exit the plane. After that you won’t see JQ staff again until the departure of the next flight… too late if your bags are only going to sydney!

That requires entry across the immigration border, so negates the international-international transfer that OP may be using.

@op You'll know when checking in at ICN, If the bags are tagged for the entire trip then you only need to go through intl transfer in Sydney, but if JQ aren't checking for the full itinerary you'll have to go through immigration, get bags, pass customs then re-check for the MEL-SYD Intl leg.
I don't recall there ever being International Transfer Desks in Australian airports as the amount of international-international transfers are small compared to other countries.

They tend to be staffed sporadically though unfortunately. A phone with a list of various numbers to call is generally there when unmanned , but whether JQ would be on the list is doubtful I reckon.

I’m guessing the majority of pax will have their boarding passes, at least electronically?
