Bidding for upgrades on Qantas international flights

I have booked and paid for an economy classic return flight from Sydney to Hong Kong in April next year. I am a Gold FF. I would like to submit a bid to upgrade to Business.

In an effort to make a successful bid am I better placed to make a full cash bid or a combination of points and cash?

Can you request a points upgrade? Others will correct me if I'm wrong but think those get priority?

I'm saying that if you request an upgrade using points rather than a bid for upgrade then I understand those requests are processed before bids come into play. You request an upgrade through MMB. I am hoping someone will come here and confirm or disagree.

Click on your ‘flights’ page and next to each flight is an Upgrade button plus a Manage button. This is on the phone. An iPad will look a bit different.

Thanks. I have received an email from Qantas asking advising this is the last chance I have to bid for an upgrade for the flight I have booked in April of next year. When I click on Request your upgrade it then tells me a bid will involve me paying $2610.00 each way plus how many points I am prepared to bid.

This seems to be at odds with the earlier response to my question about bidding which was that committing to points rather than points and pay will result in my bid given higher priority than if I only commit to trying to upgrade via MMB

If you have a Sale ticket, then yes - bidding will be your only option.
If you bought Saver/Flex, you should be able to submit a points upgrade request through MBB / QF App.

Just adding in here to help clarify in case this isn't something you're aware of: the upgrade is per leg.
In other words, a successful bid/upgrade request does not mean you get the upgrade SYD - HKG and HKG - SYD. It'd be SYD - HKG for one request and HKG - SYD for another (if applicable/eligible).

In which case, good luck with the bid. I certainly wouldn't go as high as they're suggesting. We've seen successful bids for $200-$300 come through sometimes.
