Dear Qantas: It’s Not Me, It’s You (A220s, Lounges, Curry, and Other Adventures)

Pre departure drinks would be an order from the bean counters wouldn't it ? They wouldn't leave that ad hoc to crew.... even if it was handing out waters.

Now before I get roasted for trying to compare sq to qf - a point I might make is I was under the impression they took over silk air etc (amongst I'm sure other economical reasons) was to provide a consistent product no matter where on the sq network.

Feel like the sentiment is qf has done the opposite. Either in product and certainly to poor staff :(

However bag issues everywhere with passengers jsut leaving them in the aisle leaving it to the crew to sort.
Yeah, don't think that's happening. Crew 💯 won't be lifting passenger bags.

Nothing to do with bean counters necessarily, but more to do with getting a flight out on time. Especially with only 3 crew on board.

The A220's were touted as a wonderful new addition to the Qantas fleet, but it seems they have been a bit of a flop. Why, I (don't) wonder?

Perhaps something to do with the Qantas board and its desire to screw the last cent out of everything for the mutual benefit of themselves and their shareholders. Come the next recession, we'll see how it goes...?

As for my personal experience with the A220 (only in J), I will try and avoid them in future. I'd rather ride on a Dash-8 in Y than pay a premium to sit in a 220 with the ultra squishy legroom.

National Jet Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Qantas Group, so they absolutely do have control over the product.
And in any event event of NJS wasn't 100% owned, then QF should be setting the standards that it's operator is expected to meet.

The negative comments on Wifi are a surprise for what should now be a pretty mature thing

Pre departure drinks, managing cabin baggage and lines for the loo….its not a criticism of the crew, just a pointed reminder they are getting paid peanuts to do the same job where results might not meet the expectations set by past mainline crew
Lines for the toilet and Y pax using the J toilet are a thing on the mainline too. I don't think I've ever seen a Y pax sent back to the rear toilets in years on a 737.

I whack QF a bit but in the last 2 weeks I’ve flown a number of J routes to/from ADL with a mixture of QF and VA. I would say it’s a race to the bottom with both having dropped standards. The only difference is the price and thankfully work pays for my QF flights

Spoke with a Qf exec who works for Qlink today

They actually have their ground operations conference today.

So qlink now makes up 65% of all domestic operations now with a view to take over more....

I think lack of self-service alcoholic drinks in BNE is probably a licence thing in QLD. It is in WA.

Which brings me more generally to QF Business Lounge. In response to your critiques of BNE and TUL, as a frequent Perth traveller, I almost feel like piping up like Monty Python Yorkshireman, "Spice bar? Tacos? You were lucky! " Why is the Perth lounge so abysmal? I was in Adelaide the other week - now that lounge is good!

Anyway, I do find it annoying and puzzling that food offerings at the Melbourne lounge are shut down so early, but to be fair the whole airport does. I don't know why. Even Perth airport has far more life to it than the post-8pm ghost town that Melbourne Airport is. No reason for Qantas to give in to that trend though.

I have but it doesnt happen often enough.

I like the pizza in the PER lounge. MEL Spice bar is hit and miss.
The pizza is very basic, always the same, and the sort of cheap snack that you might expect at a Qantas Club but much worse than offerings in other major cities. It's also too similar to the only other hot offering most of the time - toasties. Maybe occasionally the Spice Bar isn't to one's liking, but often it's really good. At least there's some variety. The Pizza in Perth just screams "cheap" like the rest of that lounge.

Well SYD doesnt even have Pizza; last time I was in PER there were 4 different pizzas all more tasty than a toastie where the only protein option is ham. But I guess we all prefer different things.

My gripe is when at breakfast there is no bacon, bacon should be a breakfast staple.

they have self service next door in the Qantas Pub too.

Except if there’s a rush for coffee, the bar service at BNE J is usually a lot quicker than SYD J as there’s usually at least two people (one alcohol and one coffee) whereas SYD often only has one (leading to many groans in the queue when someone orders a coffee on Friday afternoon).

I’d say it’s just a local choice. I noticed at MEL if you want juice after breakfast you now have to order it at the bar. I don’t think that’s a responsible service of juice issue…

SYD now has the panini bar
