I think we are the poorer since Google & Wikipedia came on the scene. In the golden days of yore, if you went to the encyclopaedia or dictionary you didn't just find the word you were looking for, but also saw the words either side - which were sometimes really interesting.

In January 1965 I had the perfect occasion to use the word Poon. With 2 mates we were driving from Sydney to Cairns and one night we stopped in Yeppoon. We attempted to sleep in our tent as the winds roared and the rain pelted down. Now the first European to set foot in the area was james cook. He actually called it Keppel bay. But my version was that it was suggested by a crew member that it would be an ideal place for a resort to which Cook answered -ye poon.
