Middle East Airspace Diversions/Cancellations

Just a friendly reminder to those booked on Virgin or Qatar service to Doha that while the airline can cancel flights for any reason, they are still liable for their obligations under international treaties like Article 19 of the Montreal Convention which states that airlines are liable for up to $9,000 USD in damages for disruptions when they did not take ALL reasonable measures to mitigate those disruptions. It doesn't matter if there are missiles overhead, this is a foreseeable risk when travelling in the region and contingencies must be put in place (just ask El Al).

Well that's your laugh for this week from the Roo!

So looks like VA1 diverted to Bangalore. VA15 diverted to Muscat.

In future I guess we know to trust US intel over Qatar’s.

EK says no flights diverted (just rerouted airborne)

Poor buggers on QF33 just about to land back in PER after 15 hours in the air
Does anyone have any insights what the rationale behind point of origin is as opposed to say Singapore (similar to QF9) that has a large QF presence (and visas (if required) shouldn't be too hard either)?

At least many of the pax on board will be able to go home rather than everyone need hotel accomm. More QF staff on hand to help in PER and pilot base for the 787s unlike SIN where the aircraft would be stuck.

Except that QF9 is a 787 as well. Suggesting that QF33 turned back to PER, while QF9 didn't, because it is a 787 doesn't make any sense.

I think the QF9 will continue delayed to LHR whereas the QF33 will be cancelled and pax rebooked on other services (QF websites suggests that)

So does that suggest that QF tail flights are taking a more conservative approach that EK / QR codeshare flights, and VA codeshare flights?

No, it’s because these are ultra long haul and they don’t have the capacity for large diversions off track.

Looks more and more like the mini attack on the US base in Qatar was a save face retaliation and rather the start of peace talks then further aggression. Let’s hope it holds- I neither trust Iran nor Trump to be honest!

Iran has already broken it according to breaking news.

It does not make sense to me why QF did not plan for this and I assume QF9 and QF33 would not have gone anywhere near Qatari airspace and would have flown across Oman, Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea, Egypt etc.
