Sorry I am a bit out of practice with the rules of reward bookings and was wondering if someone can job my memory...

We have recently booked a reward flight from Lisbon - Helsinki (stay in Helsinki <24 hours) on Finnair, Helsinki - Bangkok on Finnair, (3 nights in Bangkok), then BKK - SYD on Qantas operated by Finnair. This was ticketed on 9 June for late October.

Can I add a domestic booking to get back to BNE from SYD or do I need to book that as a separate flight? It seems to be about 1200 points cheaper to do that but more importantly it would get it on the same booking so that if there are any delays they have to adjust our domestic flight. There are plenty of classic rewards seats available across multiple options on that day.

There is a hard block on adding separate domestic sectors to international awards.

The only real way to get the domestic connector is if it is offered, at time of booking, as a married flight to the international sector. For example if you search MEL-LAX and it offers you MEL-SYD-LAX that’s ok, but if you use multi-city to do MEL-SYD and SYD-LAX, you won’t be able to add the domestic sector, regardless of availability.

Hobart can add the domestic sectors if you have access to them. But for everyone else, it’s a ‘no’, even when calling.

Alternatively, if you overnight you can add the sector… but that can run into other issues and you may not benefit from the through fare (cheaper points) anyway.

Apparently on separate bookings QF will reaccommodate you anyway in the event of a misconnect caused by themselves. And in the few interactions I've had with the I>D connection desk at SYD they do seem to be pretty flexible with what they can do.
