Apple Airtags

O/T but similarly O/T - anybody using any of the various business card size type trackers for iOS?
Saw those advertised on social media and immediately questioned if they were any good !

My personal theory - if any of them are good, they will be acquired by Apple. Or Apple will come up with their own version that works just as well (or even better).

Either way, I'm happy to wait until this particular technology proves itself before spending my hard earned cash.

Daughter of one of our staff members had her car stolen which had Air Tag planted in it for tracking if this actually happened. Turns out Air Tags totally useless guarding against any car thief worth his salt - basically they can easily open any locked car and locate Air Tag in seconds - throw it out window and off they go.

We’re using Chipolo cards in my wife’s purse and bumbag and are invaluable in finding them lost around the house, they provide reminders for battery declines and a 50% discount to renew. Not as simple as changing a battery on an Apple tag but very effective tracker and plays a sound when looking to find

I wouldn't say totally useless. You can get an airtag to play a sound in a few minutes but if it's adequately hidden it won't be easy to find or remove. Or the time it takes to do so may well be enough of a deterrent. And if there's several airtags at the address, it'll take a process of elimination to figure out which one is in the car (assuming it hasn't been named "Red car" or some such).

I bought some after a mate had two cars nicked and one (his) was used in a B&E spree as the Police were able to link the car's location with the crimes. Ultimately, his car was found abandoned and was a write-off, so not especially useful to him to have had one but the other car (daughter's) was found unscathed a short distance away.

Of course, the airtag won't prevent a car from being stolen, or ensure luggage is where it ought to be, it will only help locate it. They're like travel insurance, you don't need it until you do.
