Melbourne Airport goes wireless in network overhaul - Hardware - Technology - News - iTnews.com.au

Deploys a vast amount of Cisco kit.
IT services company The Frame Group has unveiled some of the networking technology it has deployed as part of the $330 million international terminal upgrade at Melbourne Airport.
Today the group showed off some smarts deployed within Melbourne Airport's expanded international terminal, T2.
The expanded terminal utilises some of Cisco's latest products, including digital media signage, which the airport intends to extend throughout all terminals.
Included in the expansion was the deployment of 800 Cisco IP phones and approximately 100 802.11n Wi-Fi access points to provide wireless connectivity to pilots and ground crew. The Wi-Fi access points were to also be used by passengers for paid Wi-Fi internet access.

That's useful. Hope it doesn't interfere with the QP access, but would be good if they upgraded to 802.11n.

If only MEL could get their act together and provide free wireless.

Exactly; but I won't hold my breathe.

So why can't Melbourne be the first airport to offer free wifi.

Hong Kong Airport was nice with their free wifi; even Ancona in Italy had a 10 minute free wifi which was very handy when you arrived and needed a phone number quickly.

Adelaide Airport has free Wi-Fi (provided by Internode). This seems like it would be a perfect opportunity to deploy it at Melbourne.

Well the infrastructure will be there. It will be upto Melbourne Airport Corp and Internode ... ;)

All they need to do is add a new SSID and tag it to go on the Internode VLAN! Since all the network switching and stuff is setup, all they'd need to do is provide WAN plus local authentication .... very easy!!

But I'm not sure how well that would go down with the commercially paid for stuff, e.g. Qantas paid wifi hot spots.

I love what ANZ is doing in places around Melbourne... Big banners up saying "Because we want you to have a simple life, ANZ free wifi here" You log on to the hot spot, view a banner add telling you about thier services and then you have free wifi...

Advertising that provides a service, a nice synergy...

I know some hotspots in sydney I have used require you to complete a survey before access... another interesting synergy

There's free wifi in Melbourne ... just park yourself outside The Lounge in the Virgin terminal.
