Berlin has forced Dubai’s Emirates airline to charge more for business class tickets on flights out of Germany, in a sign of concern the Middle East’s biggest airline is prompting as it expands its presence in Europe.

Emirates said the “imminent threat of significant fines” had forced it to raise the price of business fares on routes including Frankfurt to Johannesburg, and Hamburg to Singapore by as much as 20 per cent.

That’s terrible. They shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

German officials say non-EU airlines are barred from undercutting their EU rivals to destinations outside the 27-member bloc.

I agree, problem is it's their countries their rules... That said it's very hypocritical of them (the EU in general) to be very "we want competition - anti competitive behaviour is not allowed" and yet then whisper "unless it affects us negatively".

I do have to admit I see the EU as almost like a child who has been given a little bit of power... They know how to use that power, they just don't know how to be responsible with that power yet...

Re: Berlin forces up Emirates’s business fares

I read elsewhere that it was to do with Emirates offering fares ex Europe for less than the cost ex Dubai ie 'dumping' excess capacity on the Europe market.

Anyone who has flown Lufthansa's very ordinary business class (or their hopelessly outdated F) will understand why they were braying for protection. How can you compete with EK when you're flogging a daggy, uncompetitive product?

Emirates' efforts to achieve world domination through their Dubai hub...

Careful what you wish for.
