How much better is Qantas Platinum than Gold?

My QF SCs are due to reset at the end of Feb 2010 and I estimate that the flights I'll be on for work before then are likely to get me within 30-60 SCs of platinum. A couple of years ago this happened when I reset with only 30 to go.
My question is whether people think the extra benefits are worth the cost of a status run. If so, does anyone know any good status run suggestions from Perth?

Cheers

30-60 SCs is a small enough amount to possibly warrant the effort. Slightly better seating, OW FLounge access if you travel internationally on oneworld, QF BLounge access if you're travelling internationally on any carrier and F check-in on OW carriers where available is v nice :)

If you're travelling exclusively domestically, you could easily argue it's not worth the bother. If you do a bit of international travel (especially on QF/AA/BA), it's probably worthwhile.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I need 310 sc to get to Qantas silver by the end of February. Where would I have to fly, from Melbourne, to get that. Is it worth $600 to cancel two flights on Vaustralia to LA and fly on Qantas because the ACCC asked if I wanted a refund because VA now arrives 12 to 13 hours later than I bought

No.

QF PS is frankly a waste of time. If you really want benefits when flying QF (and if you fly QF, AA or BA a reasonable amount), consider investing in a gold frequentflyer.com.au membership and taking advantage of the cheaper QP membership.

for 30 SC - actively chase them! Spend your own $$ on a upgrade to J on a couple of Y fares MEL/SYD or do 1 JQ JetFlex AVV/SYD/AVV

Its worth the eggs benedict in the F Lounge in MEL alone...

Mr!

Ignoring the F-Lounge benefits,

I would say it is worth it for a much better chance of getting Row 4 on the 738s and 4 or 5 on the 734s - have a very good record this yr using OLCI

Sadly there is nothing on the 767s

Well hopefully it is worth it.mrsdrron just went past the 1400 SCs today.

There is also the increase in status bonus from 50% to 100%...

For 30SCs I would definitley do it - easily done for a few hundred dollars on a syd-cbr-mel-syd run and a comfortable run it would be.

Not completely..though OLCI is perhaps starting to erode it somewhat, the priority checkin queue (and you could use that too if even if you had OLCIed and had baggage to check/drop) is IMO a huge benefit...esp. when you see some of the very long Y checkin queues.

Mind you I agree with your advice about QP membership...you get the checkin and the lounge and a couple of other bits and pieces, and it certainly is not worth spending specifically to get 310 SCs for Silver.

Gosh! 30SC to get access to the FCL?? Go for it! You are nuts not to.. 60 is a no brainer to IMHO

Thanks for the opinions.
I have enough points for a OW RTW so maybe later next year I can use that once I work out how best to use it and how much time without working I can justify!
From the sounds of it WP would be perfect for a RTW.

Everyone's mentioning the FLounge, no-one's mentioned the 100% bonus points. On something like SYD-LAX-SYD, it makes a huge difference!

For 30-60 I'd definitely go for it. The Flounge, special service, domestic J lounge and 100% bonus points are worth it. :) PLUS, next year you'll only need 1,200 SC's to retain it. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

and if you do not manage to re-qualify WP - or do not fly at all in 2010 - you will still have SG (and complimentary lounge access) until the end of February 2012.

30 SCs out of Perth is discount economy to Karratha and return. 60 SCs is the same flight in full fare economy. Very easy to get.

As others have said if you have any international trips coming up then definitely do it. Travelled with a friend last year who had it (I was gold). Big difference in using the First Lounge in LA compared to the Business Lounge. (BTW, Due to being in the First Lounge I got to meet Stu Appleby!!)

The extra FF points when flying never hurts either.

If you're booking points tickets then WP is a HUGE advantage. You are able to request that Qantas open additional (classic awards) points seats on flights where there are none available, making the process of booking your points flights a whole lot easier.

This is probably the most useful WP benefit to me - in the last few years I have used it to help make 4 RTW First bookings and a last minute MEL-LHR Business flight. For the extra 30SCs to earn WP it might come in very handy when booking future points flights.
