Those that tell everyone on board their entire business plans for the next day or so when they should really be turning their phones off prior to takeoff must also be up there. :evil:

I was seated next to one woman in Y one day who was the definitive 'addict' to the crackberry (blackberry).

The FA's told her *twice* to turn it off, and as we started our take off roll, she pulled it out from under the newspaper on the empty seat between us to do something. I gave her a stern look and told her 'that's meant to be off you know' and she quickly turned it off and put it away. It was SYD-MEL. Not annoying like the ones who rabbit on their phone for as long as possible with their next day plans, but still, people need to learn to de-tatch from their phones every so often. It's refreshing

Those who choose to bring McDonalds, Burger King, Nandos whatever HOT takeaway food which really does smell. Sets a good ambience for the flight.

This happens all the time on my DJ flights due to the catering situation, I've noticed it more over the last couple of months perhaps due to the food poisoning cases on DJ.

Once the FA refused to take the rubbish so the remains of a Maccas meal sat in the seat back pocket for the rest of the flight.

Oh and I don't know about worst passengers but my favourite are small, quiet girls who like to sleep in the window seat and never have to get up to go to the bathroom.

Can't it just be put into flight mode these days? Or does it also have to be off for take-off and landing?

Oh and I don't know about worst passengers but my favourite are small, quiet girls who like to sleep in the window seat and never have to get up to go to the bathroom.

Err.. I dislike the ones that make me have to get out of my seat so they can go to the loo several times throughout the flight. That's bloody annoying

Electronic devices must be in flight mode where possible and off for take off and landing - I don't recall the exact wording, but it's on the safety card.

The technical need for having phones off during flight is poorly documented IMHO, but best to be safe rather than sorry.

I've always wondered that myself. And why something like an iPod must be turned off for take-off and landing. I always follow every safety instruction to the letter (as you say, better safe than sorry) but I've never understood those two.

Perhaps it goes back to earlier model phones. I keep my mobile on my desk and a few phones back, I could always tell when the phone was going to ring because my then CRT monitor would flicker and its built-in speakers would crackle. A second or two later, the phone would ring.

Given this type of interference, I always just assumed that a plane's more sensitive gear could be affected if a phone on board was called and that this precaution has spread to all devices.

It certainly is part of the pre takoff announcements for Qantas, AA and Alaska that phones must be put into flight mode and then turned off for take off and landing.

Probably much more to do with not being able to hear the crew's instructions "in the unlikely event of an emergency" than any sort of interference...

The one that I found interesting (read strange) was that Alaska Air had a requirement that GPS units were not allowed to be turned on in flight at all.

Hah! You should sit with me! Size 10, 5"3. ALWAYS go to the toilet before I fly so I don't disturb the aisle passenger and try to get on the plane first so I'm in my window seat without having to ask aisle pax to stand up to let me in. I lean into the window and try to sleep, not using the shared armrest. Also travel with small bag that fits under seat 95% of the time therefore taking up no space in overhead cabin.

On the issue of mobile phones in flight, Myth-busters did a test with mobile phones vs an airplane...

Their results was the a mobile phone causes no interference to a planes systems. However at the end the pilot made a good point...

Every system which is used on an aircraft has been carefully tested to ensure that it doesn't cause problems with oher aircraft systems. For them to be confident that a phone causes no problems they would have to test each one available in any market (just incase someone flys internationally )... Given the amount of testing that would be required it is easier to simply say "no phones in flight".

Of course this explaination doesn't cover other electronic equipment which may be used in flight (including phones in flight mode) as well as the mobile phone inflight trials which QF have been doing...

That sounds like me to a tee! Also, I hate carrying things and worrying about my stuff in the overhead bin, so I tend to make sure anything I carry on the plane can fit under the seat in front. I'm also the same with getting on the flight first so as to not disturb the aisle passenger.

My worst seatmates on the one flight from LHR to JFK, the guy next to me leaving me gagging every 5 minutes with his stench, as well as the chick in front deciding to recline - she couldn't get comfortable, so decided to bash the seat a couple of times to get comfortable, and then the guy behind me must've liked the music he was listening to, as he was pounding on the tray table like it was a drum kit. Luckily for me it was only a 7 hour flight. Boy was I glad to get off.
