The view from my "office"

During tonight's presentation we were told that "another cruse line" had radioed that they got within X if the iceberg. We got within 'less than X' of the iceberg. When I asked how close, told that cannot say. I dunno if that sort of competition is healthy.

I doubt that there is any "real" competition, perhaps the expedition teams may be talking it up but the captain and officers..Naaah.
Otoh, I opine that they could actually touch the iceberg gently if they chose.. the ship is not at all fragile and can bash its way into light pack ice with impunity.

Silver Wind's sister ship Silver Cloud is about one day ahead of you en route from Elephant Island to Brown Bluff so highly likely there is inter-office intel sharing re conditions etc too...

I saw the 'turn back' first part of that and was worried. Then I happened to see a massive wall of ice off to one side in the distance and guessed it might have had something to do with it.

Yes, the Captain had deviated to take us very close to the ultra-massive A23a iceberg per 'View from my office'. After that, we shot back across to head towards Elephant Island.

I noticed that the Cloud has a very old track around South Georgia. A lot of changes and directions and things I don’t understand.

very special experience to see A23a from your office in daylight, up close and personal I think!
Apparently it's moving at a rate of about 4.8 km each day and may end up grounding again at South Georgia island due to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Today's office view is of iceberg A23a, the world's largest, at 400m thick ( so about 75 m out of the water), 4,000 sq km and about 1 trillion tonnes.

It calved 40 years ago and was long stuck on the sea floor but is now in the move.

The Captain again deviated course to get us a close look at it. But it's like trying to get the Grand Canyon in one pic

They do this in Alaska too, near Hubbard Glacier. The major cruise lines do it, but Viking Tut Tuts at the competition. Of course they would. 😂

Now in the Royal Park Haneda where we were told no check in until 1500. But a couple of pilots arrived and made a bit of a fuss. They appeared to be American. So everyone waiting was allowed to check in just before 1430.

For the first time we had to go up in the elevator and were rewarded with multiple car park views.
