Hi guys,

Can we take food into Shanghai coming from other country ? Or are there restrictions similar to Aussie for this ? Planning a layover, not sure what food is available and would like to carry some cooked food with us to enter Shanghai.

Thank you.

There are official restricted items in terms of food, but generally very lax at customs.

What sorts of things are you considering?

Vegetarian cooked food. Rice, peanuts, lentils, bread etc and some veggies.
You should be good for most of those realistically unless you dislike Chinese flavours. It's quite easy to find vegetarian options as veggies dishes as a common staple in Shanghai cuisine. There's even "imitation chicken".

But if you feel like it, you can bring some if you feel more comfortable. At the end of the day Shanghai is quite a global city with stuff from everywhere (except indian food. They tried but it didn't take off).
