Can you beat this weird alternative routing?

Did you try searching as multi city? MEL-BNE, BNE-LAX.
No, I was just mucking around looking at options and this amused me when it came up so I thought I'd share and see what other weird things the system has thrown at people ;)

If you had checked luggage, the tag would be interesting! Or would they need to print out two?

When I lived in DRW I had to go to MEL.

Outbound was straightforward, but for the return I was offered:
MELxAKLxSYDxSIN-DRW with the SIN-DRW leg on JQ.

On the company travel portal it came up with the green tick for meeting the company policies.

I seriously considered it for the SCs, but the $8k price tag would have raised questions.

Earlier this year Qantas cancelled my direct HKG-MEL flight. I was offered a range of alternatives for rebooking. One of them was HKG-POM-BNE on PX, connecting to BNE-MEL on QF.
Taking the mantra of why fly direct when you can connect to new levels!

I mean I'm all for connections, extra SC's, etc but there is no way on earth I'd accept a connection via POM.

You would get three.

QF would only check MEL-CBR-SYD
You'd need to move your bags from T3 to T2
JQ would check SYD-BNE
You'd then need to take your bags on the bus to the International Terminal
QF would check BNE-LAX.

Nothing connects to or from JQ domestic.

The QF site keeps giving suggestions to route CBR-SYD (connecting to HND) via MEL and/or BNE.

I suspect the QF website might be working as designed, but revenue management keeps playing around with the domestic connections offered on international itineraries (both revenue and award tickets) with unintended consequences.
